Sue,

I just had a thought. Typically you will get a high sugar count in your urine if you blood glucose runs consistently high. It may be possible that though your blood glucose was NOT high at the time it was checked that it HAS BEEN running high consistently in recent weeks or months.

When they do blood work ask and make sure that they are ordering a Hemoglobin A1C test on you on top of testing your blood sugar. Though I am sure they are pobably already doing this it doesn't hurt to be sure. The hemoglobin A1C will give the docs some idea as to what your blood sugar has been running - on average - for the past 3-4 months. If it has been running high - just not when you checked it - that test should show it. Normal for the Hemoglobin A1C is 6.2 for NON-diabetics and anything above a 7.0 is an indication of diabetes or "pre" diabetes as some people like to say.

I do hope that everything gets worked out for you. A good indication that you have sugar problems would be to check your glucose level about 2 hours after eating - maybe 2.5 hours. If it is above 200 then there may be problems. If your sugars are running over 200 consistently after meals that could be enough to indicate a high glucose count in your urine.

I did the full diabetes test about 2 years ago so I am due for another one but when I mentioned it to my doctor she said not to worry about it. But now that two other people have mentioned the fact that it seems like I have diabetes I don't know why they wouldn't want one. But then again, I don't know why the doctor I went to today didn't want one, she just wanted the 8 hour fast.

I hadn't gone to the bathroom since about 10am and I gave the pee test at 4:30 so I guess that is a long time for sugar to build up. But it still seems like a lot.

Checking sugar in the urine is not an accurate test for diabetes. Your high urine sugar could be from any number of things. I would bet you drank a soda or a juice and ate something high in sugar between the time you urinated last and the time they collected that sample. The nurse was correct in checking your blood sugar. You must keep in mind too that one blood sugar that is high does not indicate diabetes either. You must display a history of high blood sugar and then they do a fasting blood sugar before the diagnosis can be made.

Ugg Sue.. I thought you had a stone....You sounded like a kidney stone when you were talking about your back pain... Glad you passed it.. I know my patients with stones are so easily identified..because they are so classic in the pain they have..

As far as the sugar in your urine, hmm, my only thought is, have it rechecked, you really can't make a dx based on one abnormal test, if it comes up high again in your urine but not in your blood, I would wonder if maybe it was kidney filtering issue.....Sometimes the part of our kidney that filters out the waste and puts the other stuff back into our system, gets a little stretched and it lets things out it was supposed to put back into your system...especially since you just passed a stone..

It is only a thought though, I really don't know.... but I would for sure say to have it confirmed again.... for me, I get urinary track infections all the time so I have a urine dip test set at home... one time I dipped my urine and it showed so much sugar in my urine I almost freaked out... as it would turn out.. in my case the tester was polluted and didn't work right...

Yes Jen it definitey was a stone. When I went to the bathroom I was gone so long that a teacher had to come and watch my class and my students thought I just walked out and left! I am going to get it rechecked and talk to my CF doctor again today. I don't know why I am having so much trouble accepting it if it is true.

Thank you all

Does anybody know the conversion from our numbers to US numbers?

Coltsfan says that normal is 80-120. For us it is 4-7. I've looked on internet but can't track down anything.

I just ask as reading the diabetes posts here would make a LOT more sense if I had an idea what reading you were talking about (being a diabetic myself)

Thanks in advance! x

I knew u had a stone, from my past experiences, you had all the classic signs. I'm glad u passed your stone. Bet you feel a lot better . As far as ur sugar, I'm not sure. I dont have much experience in the diabetes department (and personally like to keep it that way). I know that 69 is low. My sugar bottoms out sometimes like that (has been as low as 55), more often if I am sick or stressed out. I start feeling it when it gets down in the low 80s, however I have not been dx with anything, just told to keep and eye on it. As Diane said, the kidneys collect urine over time, so the sugar content can be high if you hadnt gone to the bathroom in a few hours. A blood test is the best and most accurate. I would call your CF doctor and tell them what you found out at ur local doctor. Since it is about time to have another test maybe they can go ahead and do it. That way you can find out for sure what is going on.
