DNASE

has anybody used the medication DNASE? If so, what is it for. Is it like a nebulized medication for lung infections (growth of pseudomonas, staph... in a sputum culture). Does anybody know where I can find more information?

Hi Julie,

I believe that DNASE is actually Pulmozyme...Pulmozyme is the brand name of the drug. If I'm wrong here, someone please correct me but I do believe they are the same thing. (Unless there's a new drug using that name that I am not aware of) ... You can search under Pulmozyme or Genentech (the company who makes it) online and should find plenty of info. I copied this from Genentech's website:

"Pulmozyme Inhalation Solution is a sterile, clear, colorless, highly purified solution of recombinant human deoxyribonuclease I (rhDNase), an enzyme which selectively cleaves DNA. Pulmozyme is administered by inhalation of an aerosol mist produced by a compressed air driven nebulizer system."

It's more of a preventive drug, not one to treat infections. It helps break up mucus to prevent infections. It needs to be taken daily to work to prevent problems. I have heard wonderful things but can't really say anything personally. One of my daughters has been on it for 6 years and is still on it daily, but my other daughter is not on it and never has been. I can't really say there is any difference in their disease. They are both extremely healthy so it's hard for me to say if the pulmozyme makes any difference or not.

Hope this helps a little. Again, anyone please feel free to correct me if there is another drug I am not aware of. I'd be thrilled to have that info also...

Meds, of course, change in effectiveness from person to person. But here's my two cents. I've been on Pulmozyme daily since it came out on the market. That was when I was 9 years old. I'm not the healthiest of CFers, but I'm not too bad either. If I ever skip my Pulmozyme, I notice it immediately. So it does quite help me. As much as you can love a med that takes time and energy to do, I love it. Heh.

Renee you are right Pulmozyme and Dnase are the same thing. They are preventative and they are supposed to
thin the mucus to make it easier to cough up. My daughter is on this. I am not sure if it helps right now because she is still a little too young to tell me exactly how she is feeling but I give it to her everyday. I feel it cant hurt only help and Emily is not the only person I have heard say they can tell a difference when they dont take it.

Just wanted to give my opinion. Also to Emily, you crack me up. I love your attitude and only hope my daughter is the same way. You remind me a lot of her with your cute and funny comments. I can also tell you and your mom adore each other this too reminds me of the relationship i have with my daughter. Keep up all the advice I think everyone appreciates it!

lol I'm so glad! Hehe. Thank you kindly for the lovely things you said. Yeah, my mom and I get along pretty well. Don't get me wrong, there were a couple of years in the mid-teens where I could barely stand her, but that was mostly my own fault.. hormones and all that good garbage. She's still a mom (ewww!!) but I talk to her about almost everything. When I tell my friends some of the things my mother and I have discussed, they're often horrified. Hahaha.

I realize this had nothing to do with the topic at hand. sorry. I used the Pulma-aid machines myself but it was filled with different stuff. It was a cough supressant, which from what I know, Is the exact OPPOSITE of what CFers use. sorry i cant be of help.
