Do you sometimes second-guess doctors & nurses?

My CF doctor is well aware of the way I am self-sufficient. Whenever I am hospitalized, he gives me carte blanche on my insulin- I simply count all the carbs in the meal and then tell the nurses how much to give me. Even though he is basically an encyclopedia of CF, he also realizes that nobody has the same symptoms, and I am the one who has to deal and control this disease everyday. I am basically working non-stop, most people work at their job 40 hours a week and call it quitting time, but I can't quit, if I even take a few days break from my well-being, I will fall steps behind, and all my efforts would have been in vain.

When I was in the hospital last time, one of my doctors ordered an IV mixed with dextrose. Well, my blood sugars were always sky high for a while, until I brainstormed and found the culprit. I yelled and complained first to the nurses' aids, then the actual docs. I told them giving me and IV mixed with sugar is like giving Superman an IV mixed with kryptonite.

Yes, I think I know my body better than some doctor who occassionally spends 15 minutes or so with me.


Just tell him/her that you are exceedingly humble and respectful compared to me. I haven't seen a doctor in over two years. <wink>

I was talking about something benign, not CF-related at the other message board, but when that person said that to me, I was PISSED and said some bad words.

I second guess absolutely every single doctor that my son is in contact with. We have had too many doctors be wrong about things in the past. I think once you are around doctors for any length of time you realize that they really are just people making educated guesses.For example - a few years ago my son had to go to the ER and ended up in the ICU for three days and I drove the doctors nuts because I would not accept their diagnosis of what was wrong with him (it was not CF related at all). Their diagnosis just wasn't making sense to me and I knew there was something else going on. In the end I was right, it had nothing to do with what they originally thought was wrong.
