Does the HT taste bad?

It is really salty (of course ) and that took a little getting used to, sometimes it irritates my throat, and I tried breathing it through my nose just to see what it did , and it gave me a big ol' sinus headache for the next 24 hours (will stick to regular nasal irrigation-lol).

It made me cough like crazy for at least a week, to the point that I strongly considered quitting it (was coughing more during the day, too) but now (about 2 months along) I don't cough nearly as much during treatments or after during the day, and I am finding it to be a good measure of how well I'm doing day to day (getting puny, cough more during HTS). I'm not getting the congested feeling I used to get either as often- even the day I forgot my Advair in the morning. I would do my xopenex and HTS in the morning if I couldn't do anything else, now.

If it's bothering her nose, maybe you could get little kids swimming nose clips to wear under her mask? I'm sorry, I don't know how old she is... If she is 2 or older, maybe you could offer her a treat (even a piece of candy- like an m&m- at this point) for doing it for a few seconds (to get her caught on to the idea) then a
minute (and an m&m- this will also give her a break from it), then another minute, for say, a total of 3 minutes the first time. Then 2 minutes each time, for 6 mins., etc.? Even if you are starting with the 3%. Eventually, she will get a few m&ms at the end for doing her treatment .

Also, this will also give her the chance to pick which senario she wants- mom making her do it, or doing it herself and getting a treat. Just a thought!
I guess the trick is that, (I am assuming she is young) since she probably isn't old enough to understand that this is good for her, that she needs something to make it worth it to her while if she doesn't like it . We all need that every once in a while! lol
Heck, the promise of a caramel sundae from McDonald's made my clinic appointments worth it to me as a kid! LOL

If she's younger than that- maybe this will help someone else, and I haven't helped you a bit! Sorry!

How old is your child using the HT? My daughter started the 7% saline when she was over 4 years old. It made her cough ALOT. We do an albuterol treatment before the saline which is supposed to cut down on coughing from the HT. Now she only coughs a little during the HT but it does not seem to bother her. She said it does taste salty but she actually likes that. We use a mask with the saline too. Sometimes She complains that the saline hurts her nose and if it really bothers her I 'll turn off the treamtent a few min early. I do feel the saline has been a worthwhile treatment we've added to Maggie's regime. Our RT said that not everyone can tolerate the saline though.

I just did it and was reminded of something else. I do not have a weak stomach. But all the coughing that the HTS induces in me gets my stomach very uneasy. I can turn the thing off, and stop coughing... and my stomach is still limbo, deciding whether or not it wants to puke. It's not always a huge deal, and I always turn the thing back on to finish the neb, but it can make your stomach very uneasy as well.

All in all, it isn't the taste so much as how it feels. It's helpful and it does a good job, but doing a good job requires making us feel kind of crappy (at least temporarily).

Sorry to hear it's not been going well, Tiffany. If you're really curious, I would do what Uli said, try it yourself for a few minutes -- it can't hurt you -- it's just salt and water. My thoughts are with you as you cope with this hurdle.

I don't think it tastes that bad (just salty), but I don't like doing it either. I DO like that it makes me cough and get mucus up & out...but it's very uncomfortable - making me cough that much hurts my stomach and throat, and the HS is irritating to my throat as well.

Best of luck!

Thank you so much for all of your input. My husband and I are amazed that it is so uncomfortable for all of you. We can only imagine what our 2 year old thinks of it.

We think cfer's are amazing people to be able to do something that is so aweful because you know that it is good for you. You are all Incredible

We are using the 7% solution. I think we will talk to our dr's about the 3% this week.

Also, thank you Amy, we do use the eflow and that was an interesting description of the difference between how much more intense the eflow is.

We are thankful that the treatments are only about 5-6 min (if she doesn't unplug it, kick herself out of our arms, or try some other very clever way of getting out of the treatment ). I don't know what we would do if it took longer. Praise God it doesn't!!!!!

Thank you all again for the insight. We are going to try some of these suggestions.

You guys are all great!!

Oh, Amy is right. Even the 3% is pretty harsh on the eFlow. So if you're using 7% on the eFlow, I'm not surprised at all that she hates it.
