Doxycycline and decreased cough?

Hello again!!

Okay, question... Has anyone here been on doxycycline before for a long period of time? If so, has anyone noticed a decrese in their cough due to this antibiotic? My mom just told me about a friend at work who happens to be a doctor. His son has CF and was going through a divorce, which caused him a lot of stress and therefore he broke out with a bad case of acne. His doctor perscribed him doxycycline, which he took as follows: 100 mg 2 x a day for 30 days, and then 100 mg 1 time daily for another 30 days.

According to him, his morning cough vanished. Said that when he did his Vest in the mornings, nothing came up. Not even flem. He's been doing this for only 2 months, and he has a rather mild case of CF, but it seems to be doing wonders for him! His father says that the doxycycline shouldn't have any effect on his psudomonus (I know I spelled that one wrong), but for some reason it's working! There is no toxicity involved with this drug, either, to my knowledge.

Now, I've been on doxycyline before, but only for a short period of time. I'm seriously considering calling my doctor and asking him to put me on the same regimen to try this out for myself, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar.

I'll let you guys know if it works!!

Just because his cough has eased & he isnt producing much during treatment doesnt mean its not there especially if he has cultured psuedomonas. Many meds (especially some for acne) tend to dry us up including the lungs. This isnt a good thing because even tho we dont hav that annoying cough, it doesnt give us the chance to get the crap out that lets the bacterias breed & damages the lungs. He should have another culture done to see if the pseudomonas still exists & if so then all the acne med has done is dry him out so much the sputum wont move.

I was on doxycycline for a long period of time years ago and had the same benefits ( still rotate onto it every few weeks now). When i first went on it i didnt have b.cepacia and it made a dramatic difference in how i felt and dramatically reduced my cough which i loved. I never did produce much sputum ( still dont) so i didnt notice any difference in the amount i coughed up. Doxycycline is a good antibiotic, and it is also helpful for the cepacia i have now., That and minocycline are a few of my favorites. I dont see a problem in asking your doctor to prescribe it for you, every little bit we can do to help ourselves feel better is a good thing <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

i have been on both doxycycline and minocycline, and loved the way it made my lungs feel but infortunately could not tolerate them because of the side effects. i got really woozy and dizzy feeling, totally out of it and almost light headed. i was mad because the doxycycline was making my skin great also! but i had to discontinue it. anyway, i do remember really liking both, but i guess i just cant tolerate tetracyclines.

p.s. why wouldn't the doxycycline help his pseudamonas? has he been cultured for the sensitivities

Thanks for the replies! I think I'll try this out for a while and see how things go... I'm not sure if he's been cultured or not. Didn't get that much info. But I'll try to find out. His father is a good doctor, though, so I suppose he knows what he's doing... Even so, I'll check out the risks, Melissa, thanks.

I've tried the doxycycline too and noticed no cough after a week or so and I was always wondering why the cough disappeared? Was it because the med did a good job in getting rid of mucus or like someone else mentioned did it dry things up and then I'll have to bring that dried stuff up eventually when it loosens up again.
You may want to ask your doctor or pharmacist? this question. I'd be curious what the explanation is.

I didn't know that doxycycline was prescribed for Acne. I was on it for a few weeks while in the hospital and it worked great for me. My FVC went from the 50's to 75. It was crazy. I haven't been on it since but it really did help.

Alright, just following up on this thread. Talked to my doctor and he DID NOT recommend using the doxy unless I have an infection. He did, however, say that there is new literature that says using pulmosyme TWICE a day instead of once helps to reduce coughing. I've only been on it once a day, and I'm sure some people on this site probably do it twice a day already, but just FYI.
