Elliptical machines

I just got one this year. Because I am used to using the ones the gym has and becuase both me and my husband needed to use it on a regular basis I needed one that woudl accomodate his long stride length and be rugged for routine use. I also wanted one that would have an incline because that is what I always used. All of these factors in mind and the fact that we both had bad knees I invested in a precor elliptical (precor is a brand name) they are 'the' name for ellipticals. I feel it was worth the investment but there are some pretty decent cheaper models out there.

I woudl highly recommend doing your homework on these there are huge variations in brand durability even in same price range.

Hi,

I don't have any advice on which one to buy, but I absolutely love elliptical machines! I joined a gym for a short time last year and that was my favorite piece of equipment. It burns the most calories (if you're looking to lose weight) and it's got the smoothest work-out technique, in my opinion. I used to run a lot, and the treadmill is just too jarring and rough on my legs and body. Also, it gives your whole body a workout rather than just the legs (like a bicyle). It does have a technique to it that takes some getting used to. I would highly recommend it, although it's not for everyone.

Hey Tiffa,

If you are looking to compare elliptical machines to other cardio options, I would recommend going to a local gym for a day or two (most have a 7 day free trial period with no obligations) and see what you like. Some gyms will even have more than 1 brand of treadmills/ellipticals/etc, so you can compare features.

Also, most sporting goods stores (Academy, Sports Authority) have some set out that you can try as well. Once you have a grasp on what you want, you can try out a used sporting goods store, or look at buying online if you want to find a more cost effective cardio machine rather than buying a brand new one.

Personally, I hate the elliptical; I'll only use it when I'm injured and can't run...and I go crazy lol. I much prefer running or the stairstepper. My absolute favorite cardio was the tread climber, but my gym doesn't have them anymore It's all personal preference though. My roommate loves the elliptical...just depends on what works for you
