Enzymes

Hi, I have a quick question, my son has special needs and cf. He hates to take his enzymes. Most of his meds are liquid which are easier to take. Are there any enzymes that are liquid? I have not really been able to find any info. on this. If not any good ideas how to get him to take them easier? Thanks alot, Janelle

Until DS was a couple years old, we had to empty his enzyme beads onto a spoonful of baby food bananas...

Previously Pancreacarb's "beads" were like little grains of sand, so one could empty the capsules into some babyfood and put them in an oral syringe. I believe the reformulation of Pancrecarb has just gotten FDA approval. Otherwise, would Creon beads be small enough? There's still the texture issue, but might be doable...

From my knowledge & a survey I filled out last year, I don't believe there are any liquid forms of enzymes.

I think all enzyme capsules have the bead contents in them. My parents used to open the capsules & sprinkle the bead contents onto pudding, whipped cream, apple sauce & chocolate syrup. I heard somewhere a few years ago that a study has proved that the enzymes aren't as effective when mixed with dairy products?? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I would go to a special pharmacist. I can't remember the name but there are certain pharmacists that have the ability to mix compounds. Only thing is the mix is good for 10 days only. I'm not sure how liquid it is or how well it will work. A friend of the family tried making a liquid enzyme for us to put in the feeding bags. We never used it because it didn't last long and our insurance wouldn't cover it.
There is also a powder pill form of enzymes. We used it for feeding bags briefly, we would crush up the pills and mix it into their formula. The bad thing about that is you can't inhale the powder and have to be very careful.

I believe Amber is correct the enzymes need to be mixed with an acid. We always used spoon fulls of jelly for the beads. I wonder if you got him to eat tapioca pudding if that would help with the texture of a strange bead in his food if that would help him adjust to the tiny beads of the enzymes?

GOOD LUCK!

Jen mom to 4. 3 w/cf and one lucky red head.
