Exacerbation

Hi all,

I was reading a bit about exacerbation, and I am wondering exactly what it is? I have been feeling a bit ill since last week (it's better now), with pain in my lungs, fatigue, bit of soar throat, and coughing up mucus, but not that much. Is that exacerbation?
I have been taking oral antibiotics, but have not spoken to my doctor yet, I have an apointment in the begining of March, when I will bring it up.

Thanks for your replys <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi,

I'm not sure what it really means but we call it a tune-up. It is when Austin (my 8 year old with CF) goes into the hospital for at least 2 weeks and he gets a picc line in his arm and their his iv antibiotics are administered. then he gets chest therapy 4 times daily while there.

I'm sorry but thats all I really know.

At my clinic they use a check-list/rating system to determine if it is a exacerbation.

The following is included:

Fever, shortness of breath, coughing blood/or blood tinged mucus, increase in mucus, change of mucus color, fatigue, increase cough, drop in FEV1, loss of weight/eating patterns.

For each one of these 1 or 2 points is assigned- once your score is added up, the doctor will determine if antibiotics are needed. I cannot find my paper that tells me how many points each symptom is assigned.

A sputum culture should also be done.

I hope you feel better soon!

Exacerbate means an increase in severity. Any disease can become exacerbated. This simply means that the symptoms of it become more pronounced. When patients with CF become ill or the bacterias that they culture become overgrown, etc. it's refered to as an exacerbation.
