Hey guys,

Well after thinking it through and now that I am feeling better I am wanting to get on a routine of exercising. I figured it may help me to put on some muscle and some weight in the process.
Here is the problem that I am running into ... I don't know what to do. I want to exercise to help with my lungs yes - so I need something aerobic/cardio type to build stamina and endurance and all. I also want to do something to help with weight/muscle. I don't want to really bulk up mainly just keep the weight I gain from being fat weight and keep it musce healthy weight, so I am not looking to do heavy weight training - I am not opposed but that isn't exactly what I had in mind at present.

I went to the store the other day and was looking at things like yoga and pilates type things and different cardio type workout video type stuff (I am hoping to stay indoors for the time being since it is summer and I am in Florida). I was just getting nervous because everything that I saw for any workout type thing had "burn fat fast" "shed pounds in minutes" "lose "50 thousand" pounds you don't have to lose" in the title. I know this may seem like a retarded question but I am wondering if I am going to be shedding weight if I do start to exercise. I am not going on a diet type meal plan or anything if anything I am eating more. I just don't want the exercise to be counter productive in weight and want to prepare myself if I need to double my food intake to prevent alot of weight loss with exercise.

So are there things that I can do that will help build stamina and muscle without causing me to lose weight ... like I said this may seem like a retarded question but I have never been one to voluntarily work up a sweat lol so regular exercise is new territory to me. I am just looking for ideas. Thanks guys.

You are in the same exact boat as I am. I was seriously thinking about getting a Richard Simmons Sweating to the Oldies tape (if they are still available) & start with that. I figured since he works with heavy set people that its a good way to ease into it & anything with music is helpful to me. I dont normally watch Richard, but I think he might be what I need right now. I dont want to invest in any type of gym membership or equipment until I am more in shape & know that I can handle it. Hell my doctor can do 15 pushups & I cant manage 1. Whats wrong with that picture? UGGG......

I would really suggest Hatha yoga or a flow yoga: it will allow you to improve your breathing because you are supposed to breath evenly and deeply while doing the yoga postures Yoga also helps you build muscle and stay toned.

Pilates is also great but focused more on the core - also the breathing is different than yoga but still beneficial.

While doing these classes twice a week - I found my FEV1 went up

I enjoy going to classes - motivates me to stick with it - if I'm doing something by myself I don't have the enthusiasm I have if I'm with a group and upbeat music. Here are descriptions of the 3 classes I participate in. My club has open classes - come or don't come as you wish. I suggest this - crappy to feel guilty about loosing money, etc. if you aren't up for going.

Desription:
Work muscular endurance through a continuous flow of exercises designed to target individual muscle groups focusing on strengthening, toning, and defining major muscle groups. (All Levels)
In my words: it's low weight with high rep's. The high rep's makes it low cardio which is perfect for me. It's an hour long so a great workout. I've been doing this since Jan and my butt is higher/tighter and when I lift a plate a little bicep pops which I think is hot :)

Description:
Cardio training conducted on Mini trampolines! Wu hoo. (All Levels)
In my words: this is great because I'm getting cardio but I get to set up on pace if I don't feel like working out too hard there's the 'basic bounce' I think there's videos for this it's called 'Urban Rebounding' google it.

Description:
Cardio fusion of Karate and American Kickboxing combining authentic martial arts movements to energizing music. (All Levels welcome, expect a high intensity workout)
In my words: this is not as much of a cardio workout as rebounding because it's a lot of striking (arms)


I think classes are great and feel much stronger since I've started regularly attending them. Sure beats the treadmill for sure.

In terms of feeling self conscious that I can't keep up, yadda, yadda. I just don't. If people seemed concerned or if a beginner is going to stand behind me and maybe be messed up by me not following the instructor verbatum I tell them about my CF and how I have to pace myself. Go get 'em!

oh and about your concern with losing weight due to working out. Don't cry over spilled milk before it's spilled. Start working out if you start to loose weight add an additional hi-cal snack during the day. Exercise will increase your appetite overall most likely (although it stunts the ap. right after you workout so don't expect to eat a huge dinner right after working out). I haven't lost any weight. I do think I've replaced some fat with muscle which after all weighs more than fat.

I walk on my treadmill and also do some light weight lifting. To make walking on the treadmill less boring, i have a compact disk player next to it and i only allow myself to listen to my favorite cd's when i am walking on the treadmill. Motivates me to get walking because i am a huge music fan and like i said the only time i ever listen to my favorites is when i am on the treadmill, so it's either walk and get to listen to them or not listen to them at all. Works for me <img src="">
On the losing weight issue, you most likely wont. Chances are you may get hungrier from workouts, i know i always do, and also you will burn fat, but gain muscle which has more weight to it. Exercise in ANY form is better than no exercise at all. Walking is best for me ( on the treadmill), because since it is inside,weather is not a factor, i can speed it up or slow it down to any pace i feel comfortable with at that time. I tend to start slow, then gradually speed it up till i am walking very fast and stay at that speed for about 15 minutes or so, and then slow it down gradually till my time is up. All the while enjoying my favorite cd's <img src="">

Have you heard of DDR? It stands for Dance Dance Revolution and it's actually a video game that has dance pads. That has proved to be the best form of exercise for me b/c I have so much fun doing it that I do it more frequently and for longer sessions than any other kind of exercise. There are different levels so if you are sick or feeling bad one day you can just do slower songs. It sounds silly, but it really is a lot of fun and great cardio! I work up a sweat every time. I haven't had any significant weight loss doing it, but you'd just have to try for yourself.

The other thing that I love to do even more is ride horses. It's a lot harder work than you would think, and until you get really good (which can take years and years!), you bounce around so much that it's even better than chest pt. I haven't been able to ride in a while b/c it's so expensive, but if you are able I think it's a fantastic option.

Some things I do know...muscle weights more then fat and it eats fat basically.I would do some kind of light cardio to help with your lings and some light weight lifting to build muscle...you don't want to do to much and get huge just enough to have some nice muscle...also protien Protien will help you keep on weight.

When I go to the gym, I do light weight lifting, I walk on the treadmill at a brisk pace for about a half hour, and I do some cycling. I'm going to be signing up for a yoga class this summer as well, because I've heard so much great stuff about yoga.

I swear by cycling. I live in Texas so I understand the heat factor. Go early in the morning when it is cool and the sun is low in the sky. Load up on charbs and water before and after the ride. The great thing about riding a bike is you are outside and you pick your view. If the heat is still too hard on you, an excercise bike is ok I guess. I don't use one but I would if I needed to. I just love to ride a bike!!! Good luck with your endevor.

I am totally for riding a bike - I usually try riding later in the day early evening if I get a chance. Yeah I am with you on the Yoga thing Liz, that is why I was going to look into it - everyone that has mentioned it on here has said nothing but good things.
As for weight loss I am glad that none of you have had a problem with losing weight when exercising. It puts my mind at ease - for the past few years for every pound I gain I lose 2 it seems and it takes me a while to gain mostly so that was a concern for me.

I'm intersted in different exercises too. I have rollerblades but lately I've been feeling a little crappy and want something a little less vigorous. Has anyone here tried the workouts with the huge ball (for all I know, that could be a form of yoga...I'm yoga illiterate)? It seems like it would do well for lightweight stuff, yet produce good tone and muscle.

Gosh, I'd love to get some rollerblades and do that on a nightly basis instead of going for a walk.

Or Liza, when you do go for walks you could use light ankle weights, 3 lbs each or something. That's a little more tough of a work out then just walking, and you'll be building nice leg muscles.

I try to run, jog, walk whatever I can do. I think the deeper the breathe the better. I had a good conversation with the PT last clinic appointment so I am also trying to do so yoga...initally I thought she was crazy but it does force you to breathe deeply and concentrate. She also recommended doing some upper back and shoulder lifting and stretching to help keep my back aligned so that my lungs won't become further compressed. Of course I think swimming is still the best exercise but I am not a strong swimmer so I stick to the treadmill.

I use a Precore (www.precore.com) and lift weights to strengthen my upper body. I used to do yoga, but then i got busy. I noticed that it really helped me breath deeper.

I really wish that I didn't have to work so I could eat, sleep & exercise all day long....

How about playing a sport? I play volleyball which gives me cardio (although I don't have to run long distances or anything, which is good) as well as muscle. And you get to socialise at the same time - which can be a huge motivator.

If you don't have a big interest in any particular sport then around here we have social competitions called "3-sports" where they play a different sport each week. People don't have to have any experience in the sports and it's a lot of fun.

As far as your weight concerns.. I actually put on weight when I started going to the gym a few years back. I was going 3-4 days a week, doing about 45 minutes of cardio (treadmill, cross trainer, bike, ergo) and 15 minutes of simple weights. I don't know why it made me put on weight but I wasn't complaining!
