Experience with prednisone

I have only had prednisone once, so when my mom asked me about it I was not a lot of help. Anyway, my mom has ulcers in her colon and she passes blood clots every time she uses the restroom, which can be as frequently as 15 times in a day. Anyway, her doc put her on 30 mg of predinsone every day for a month and then 2 1/2 months worth of less prednisone to get off of it.

The one time I was on prednisone was for about 10 days total and a lot smaller dose. My mom is very concerned about being on this high of a dose and for such a long period of time.

Does anyone have experience with long term prednisone use?

Oh girl I am the Prednisone queen, I live on pretty high doses of prednisone ranging from 60 mg IV push every six hours all the way down to 30 mgs a day, I never go below that on a steroid.

It is a tough call because the steroids will help her colon and all that inflammation, she will probably feel so much better, but I won't lie, though I have been on prednisone for years, and it takes a while to do damage, make no mistake the side effects are nasty... I have severe bone loss, trouble with my eyes, blood sugar issues, and I could go on and on, Yet I can breath, so to me the benefit is worth the risk... I also have severe weight gain, mood swings, moon face, swollen belly, insomina etc, again, for me I need to breath so I have to deal.....

30 mgs for a month is a decent dose... once she starts taking it for over a week, she has to stay commited to the weaning process because at that dose it will shut down your adrenal glands and if you suddnely stop taking it, your body will go into an adrenal crisis....

It isn't something to take lightly but again if the quality of life is not good, to me it is worth those other htings happening...

Best of luck

She definitely needs to make sure she takes it as prescribed. She also needs to make sure she is taking in EXTRA vit d AND calcium! Im talking multivitamin, plus a vit d & calcium supplement -and getting lots of milk/cheese/yogart. This is especially important b/c she is older and already at risk for osteo issues.

I used to be on pred. alot and at the lovely age of 17 was dx'd with osteoporosis. After 2 years of taking 50,000ius of vit d I was able to regain my bones loss.

Aside from that my only other side effect is increased appetite. I mean WAY increased. So she will probably need to count cals or start a decent exercise routine.

I'm the same...lots of bone loss from 10+ years of use. I'm off now, and I've made it clear that I only want to go on again if absolutely necessary. I also had a VERY hard time getting off. My adrenal gland was severely suppressed. This was all happening when I was 15 or 16. Finally, due to my own stubbornness and frustration, I took myself off without the doctor's blessing. I was only on a maintenance dose at the time, so it wasn't such a big deal. Still, it worked, and I've been off ever since.

But, I agree with Jennifer--quality of life is a huge factor to consider. I would go back on in a heartbeat, even knowing my past trouble with it, if it meant improving my quality of life.
