FAFSA tips

Good luck with the fasfa. I am no longer working, but they told me I had to use my income from last year when applying because it was based of off last year and not now. That stinks!!!! My fasfa also got selected for a "review" so I had to send in copies of every tax document I had plus anything that even looked like income. I'm still waiting to see what I get and what I get to borrow. (yeah, like borrowing is a privelidge-I so love debtisgust

apply as early as you can.

Ask the office for a re-evaluation of funds form if the above doesn't work (or in that case they'll probably just send you the form). If you can file as independent. If you don't have your parents helping you out financially and they know that they go easy on you (relatively).

All the advice you have gotten is very good.

Once you apply with last year's info, they will calculate your EFC (expected family contribution) but dont freak. THen you can file a change or status/income form and they can re-calculate. You should be able to use all extra costs like Julie was describing as well. Once you are in school not making any money etc then I think is when you file the hardship forms.

YOu can also talk directly with teh school and dont be afriad to grovel a bit and throw the whole health thing in there if you think it will get you anywhere (hey we need some benefits IMO) anyway the school may be willing to give you a 'scholarship' where they will offset a bit of your costs.

If you have any savings get them into someone else's name because otherwise you are SOL even if this is what you will need to help you get through.

Depending on what field you are going into you might be able to get extra help for being a minorityh in that dept (female). I know our physics dept aroudn here is all male and mostly indian exchange students so if you were a white female and got into the program you could get extra help because they were trying to encourage diversity.

It is easiest to do the fafsa over the web and alot quicker. Apply at the earliest date possible.

The first year will be the roughest as you made $ last year but the next years you will be better off because you wont have worked the previous year. (Ok maybe you are advers to this but if you dont take classses during summer see if anyone you have connections with will pay you cash to work during summer)

I have read your conservative views so I dont know how you feel about this--hooray nice to see a younger person with such views especially when you are on a college campus--anyway I know some who in college were getting food stamps and medicaid because they ewre not workign so might look into this.

there are some really good sstate and local websites that allow you to search for outside scholarships I dont have any of those websites anymore but I am sure you can find them.

oh and for purpose planning ahead make sure if you get loans you get from at least 2 different companies over the span of time so you can later do a consolidation loan as you will get way better deals then if you just keep original interest rates -- I consolidated mine down to 4.15% which is great!

what are you going back for?? Best of luck.

Thank you all so much for your help! You guys are great.

I applied for FAFSA over a month ago, so I'm glad I got that over with. I just decided where I will be attending MBA school yesterday, so it's time for me to get this ball rolling.

I will keep you guys posted - and I'm sure I'll have a billion more questions.

Thank you guys again. I am very grateful.

You have come to the right place.. I am FAFSA Queen.. I will talk to you and help you

You have to apply for the FAFSA and then make a direct appeal to the FIN aid office in the school you are going to.. You have to write a letter and tell them your case of major change of income status.. It worked really well for me

I miss you</end quote>

Thanks Jen. I'll do that right away
