A fish processing factory in Scotland has offered its employees lessons in Polish as they have 150 poles out of the 600 workers so as to not let them feel ''left out''.

And I thought having a grip of the English language was a must for migrant workers to the UK.
I guess things like these happen the world over, scared of law-suits no doubt.

Kinda off topic, but a coworker tells the story of when his dad worked for the railroad up along the North Shore of Lake Superior. An employee, who was of Finnish descent, demanded that they get a major Finnish Holiday off from work. So he gave the employee a response, in writing. Employee started swearing, asked what the deal was and was told -- if you can't read the letter, then you can't take the day off. The response was written in finnish.

Oh and don't get DH started on this topic. Years ago we purchased a craftsman lawnmower from Sears. Was manufactured in Michigan. Instruction manual was printed in Spanish. Wasn't an english copy in the box. Man, was HE annoyed!

I learned quite a bit of spanish and portuguese when I was a PI, but I rarely used it and nowadays I almost never actually speak the stuff. Unless I'm in a wal-mart I do think an immigrant should learn our language for the same reason I would have the common sense to learn french or japanese if traveling to such a place. I don't think it's racist to expect that much, it's actually better for'em.

actually, no, it doesn't make me mad. what seems weird to me is that the CF pharmacy (CFers are predominately white, right?) would have the NEED to offer such a service.

Laura, I thought about saying something like that in my post as well until I remembered that someone taught me on this site that Mexicans are Caucasian.

There's only three races:

Caucasian
Negroid
Mongoloid

I have been noticing that more than half the stuff i buy in stores these days have descriptions or directions written in 2 languages above the english description . WHATS UP WITH THAT !!!! This bowing down to everyone else crap REALLY pi$$es me off BIG TIME !! Immigrants who come here should learn english or suffer like they used to do years ago. If i went to Russia, or Mexico i would EXPECT to have to learn the language to survive , i certainly would not expect them to cater to me and whoever else i bring with me. We in America are becoming a bunch of panises and the rest of the world knows it. Its time for us to buck up and knock it off and stand our ground......dammit lol

Try this. The place where I works gets a lot of customers who speak something other than english (Spanish, lots of Asian languages, Russian, on and on). Spanish speaking employees usually get paid about 50 cents an hour more than non-spanish speaking ones. But the ones who speak other languages get the same wage as everyone else because their language usually isn't as common as Spanish. How dumb is that? They go out of their way to hire people who speak Spanish, but they don't really care about any other language, and it DOES get used, I've had to have a co-worker help me with a customer who spoke Laos before.

Its the same here in Canada. Press 1 for English, press 2 for French. But we're also known as a Bilingual coutnry. Funny thing is, is that majority of Canadians speak english.
