female cf fertility

Hello all!

I have a few questions regarding cf fertility in women, I have been looking through the posts and haven't come across anything that sounds like me.
Okay here goes from the start.

3 years ago I came off the pill, I did'nt know that I had CF at the time and so we thought that whatever happens happens.

1 year later I had a smear test that came up with grade 3 cell change which I had to go in and have laser treatment for june 05 !

I then did not have a period for 6 months, when they finally arrived i had spotting every few days for months.

I then had to go in for keyhole surgery to check if my tubes were patent dec 06 ( i think that's what they call it)

feb 07 i was dx CF df508 & R117h
( After losing my brother 41 to cf 12/12/06 DX day before passing )

During all of this time I have had appointments at the gynae clinic that keep telling me to come back in 6 months time and if i'm not pregnant by then they'll do something else. Now I have to change my gynae clinic to the same hosp as CF clinic as they know more about CF & fertility I have been waiting for an appointment for past 3 months!

Okay now for the questions!

Does this all sound like something that is normal to CF women? Or is it a separate issue?

I have heard that women with CF have thicker Cervical mucus ( I think I have)
what do you do about that ?

I bought a book on Fertility ( not specialising in CF) and have tried to follow eating, drinking, timing, etc and it still hasn't helped, Any more suggestions?

I have been wandering if they are going to keep fobbing me off till I'm too old to have children and then say sorry your too old we can't help you now!

Oh i'm 33

Hope you can help

Sarah,

Okay, I am a Medical Assistant with CF so I can offer advice to both situations...

Firstly, I was a Medical Assistant to cancer for 4 years. I dealt with everything from bone to brain, from breast to prostate, and from cervical to oral. I have seen many stages of cancer and precancers...At my clinic, I assisted with exams and prepared patients for radiation and/or chemotherapy.

Based on the problems you described, it is likely that you may have a harder time conceiving due to past cervical issues. Any kind of procedures like that can change the PH of your cervix and cause a decrease in cervical mucus. You may even have irregular discharge like spotting. Scarring is also a possibility. I had a couple women that were "precancers" that did try to conceive after such procedures and couldn't without assistance. This could be a real problem for you, honestly speaking. You may need assistance to conceive.

On the flip side, yes, CF patients do have abnormal cervical mucus, but not all. I have ALWAYS had abnormal cervical mucus. I have tried Robitussin, Mucinex, & Evening Primrose Oil. Nothing has really worked for me, and I have been trying for 20 months. I am currently going to a fertility specialist to start IUI to try and conceive. If you want, check posts by Jennifer1981 or fondreflections. Both are me. I just changed my username 2 months ago. You can also ask whatever questions that you have. I'll answer to the best of my ability. I've been out of the cancer circle for 4 years now, but I will try and offer advice if possible.

Honestly, the abnormnal CF mucus COULD be an issue. However with the procedures that you had, I think your infertility has more to do with the procedures than the CF. At best, I would say both are factors. Even your cycles are messed up. I would suggest seeing a fertility specialist and not wait. You are probably wasting you time! I'm sorry to be brutally honest, but I just don't want you to keep hoping and getting probably nothing in return.

Look at me, I wasted 20 months!!! I WISH I could have gotten that back, but I can't. I can only move forward.

What I would do if I were you:
*Make sure you and hubby/boyfriend/fiance are ready.
*Make sure your CF doctor is on board.
*Make sure your insurance will pay for a consultation with a fertility specialist.
*Setup an appointment with a fertility specialist.
*And good luck!

Plus, you are 33-years old. 35-years of age is when doctors really lower your success rates based on age. I wouldn't wait. Heck, my Mom went through menopause at 35-years-old. If I waited until 33, I'd probably would be screwed! At 35, your follicles don't mature correctly or aren't of a good quality, generally speaking. This is why your success rate is lower.

Hi Jenny,

Thank you so much for the advice! I think I have just been letting the whole situation just run it's course rather than thinking that there might actually be a BIG problem. Got my head stuck in sand and think that it's going to happen one day out of the blue.

My Fiance has had tests and the results were fine also he has had a genetic test and that was good too!

So I will call my CF doctor and ask her to push through the appointment sooner so we can start getting this sorted out.

Also although I had to have the laser treatment I never thought of it as serious as pre cancerous, maybe a little naive but it has'nt been something that i thought too much about. I will now!

Thanks again

You're Welcome, Sarah!

I think you have a good plan. Bump your appointment up and take it from there.

As far as the pre-cancers go, there really isn't much you can do about them. Just be sure to stay on top of it by always getting your annual or biannual Pap and pelvic. Those tests are your first lines of defense in preventing anything from advancing. Many pre-cancers remain that as long as you keep a close eye on them.

One other note, I know that many of my patients experienced increased vaginal dryness. Now, I don't know if you use anything to "fix" that or not, but you should use something called Pre-Seed. Pre-Seed is the ONLY sperm-friendly lubricant out there. All other lubs KILL sperm, even our own saliva. It can be pricey so I'd only buy it around the time you would ovulate, if at all.

Like I said, I would recommend seeing a specialist; however, in the meantime you can still try naturally for the heck of it. The Pre-Seed might help REGULATE your PH down there. One factor that I am curious about is if your PH is too high. If you are vaginally dry and had the procedures you had, your PH may be too high. A high PH would KILL sperm.

Like I said, I think a specialist is your BEST option. They can do all kinds of tests to find out what might be wrong. You live in the UK, which is a good thing. You probably have more coverage for fertility specialist services than I do in the U.S. Double check me there, though. You could take advantage of that.

Well, good luck!

BTW: On a side note, what is your FEV1? Your CF doctor will most likely want it to be at least 50% before agreeing with you to try anything. 50% is the cutoff here in the states; however, my doctor say 60%. You may need to work on your numbers a little before stepping in. I don't have the slightest idea what you FEV1 is. I'm just taking your age into consideration.

You may need to work on your numbers a little before stepping in. I don't have the slightest idea what you FEV1 is. I'm just taking your age into consideration.
