Fighting off a cold??

On Friday I called my CF clinic because I felt like I was coming down with something. Uncontrollable cough, more sputum, tighter feeling in my chest, etc. I still am feeling somewhat under the weather, but not enough to stop me from doing what I normally do. My cough is still there but I am coughing up gunk from pretty deep in my lungs. I have been doing my pulmozyme, hypertonic saline, advair, and walking on my treadmill.
I don't really feel as if I am bad enough to start my antibioitics yet....and usually when I get a cold I go downhill fast until I start meds.
Is this unusual? I will of course start my antibiotics if it gets worse-but I am wondering if I can get rid of this myself. My lungs aren't tight anymore and I have no fever, etc.
I am taking a multivitamin and EmergenC as well. Any thoughts? In the past every cold I had turned into a lung infection...but I am wondering if I can get rid of this myself?

Hi Marci,

I tend to get a cold every winter, and sure enough this winter was no exception. I came down with something last month that turned into a lung infection. I'm always the type to "wait it out" because there are times when it does go away on its own. So I did that, but it turned into a nasty cough and so I just started the antibiotics. Last week I got another cold, but this one apparently didn't turn into a lung infection and I'm doing fine now and the cold is gone. So I think it just depends on how you feel. If you think it's turning into a lung infection, then it's probably not a bad idea to get on something. But then again, you might be able to kick it on your own. Only you know your body the best. So I guess I really didn't help you out any, but I do completely understand where you're coming from!

Thanks so much for the info you shared! Last winter I was pretty much sick the whole winter (on antibiotics every 2-3 weeks it felt like!) so this winter has been much better-I was on meds for Nov/Dec (6 weeks total for an infection that wouldn't go away) and nothing since then besides my routine stuff.

I was feeling kind of bummed on friday because I was coming down with something....and wanted meds just in case it got worse over the weekend (which in the past they always have-all of my colds seem to move into my chest and turn into a lung infection).

Today I am feeling pretty good-my lungs are not tight at all, and I am coughing up gunk from really deep-and its a loose cough. I actually have some confidence that I pay be able to kick this without antibiotics (knock on wood!) which hasn't happened since I was diagnosed 15 years ago(I was diagnosed at age 20, and am almost 35 now).

We'll see what happens I guess! I have been working out on my treadmill 5-6 days a week (walking at an incline with varying speeds) so I am wondering if that is helping me-I am sure it is!

I have gotten really good at kicking a cold and not letting it turn into a lung infection. I take extra supplements, work on my PH balance, try to break the cycle of infection by showering, washing my clothes, cleaning my bedding/sleep area, etc. I think this stuff tends to linger in part because it gets onto stuff we touch and then we get it back when we touch it again (like our bedding, nightstand, etc). Trying to make sure to kill the infection on things I have touched in addition to getting extra support for my body has been extremely helpful for me.
