First time for Home IVs...

My son is doing home IVS right now- cefTazidime and tobramyacin. The cef is done every 8 hours and tobra every 12- we do cef 7, 3 and 10-which I guess that last dose is 7 hrs after 2nd one. The tobra is 10 and 10. This is what the pharmacy suggested. The cef is in a huge syringe and he pushes it in over 10 min- the tobra is in one of those balls and is very easy. The cef is frozen and we take 3 out at a time and put it out to be room temp 2 hrs before using. But we take one out the night before to be ready for the morning- they said they are ok out of frig for 12 hrs. He had blood work done today- they also said to drink lots of water to help flush the tobra out of the kidneys. Good luck- it is a lot easier than the last time we did it at home. One caution- my son is allergic to zosyn and Ive heard that a lot of people are- watch out for rash and high fevers.

Wow, thanks for all the great replies & info. The doctors did confirm today that I'll be on Tobramycin every 24 hours. Thanks for pointing out that Tobi is the name for the inhaled one - I didn't relize that before. I'll be on the IV one in the pressure balls. I'll also be on Cefepime every 8 hours.

I'm waiting to hear back from scheduling when I'll start, but it's likely to be on Thursday, this week. Keep the feedback coming! :) It's very helpful (and comforting). Thanks, ~Juliet

didn't read all the other replies but here is my info. i've had three piccs and all were a success. i did my meds every eight hours. i found out that doing them at 6am, 2pm, and 10pm worked out the best for me. i usually would take my meds out the fridge about an hour before. if i forgot the infusion time would just take longer. i've never had a pump or had to have iv bags. i've always used the eclipse balls. they are great. well good luck, there isn't any negatives about a having a picc, when that's my opinion.

oh i heard the seal-n-press works great to cover your picc while taking a bath.

They will give you a shot in your arm to numb your whole vein cause they are threading the iv tube all the way up your arm and towards your heart. Just try to relax . It does not hurt once the numbing shot is working the shot itself just burns a bit and then you can not feel anything except maybe just maybe a little pressure.

GOOD luck. I do IV's at least every year and in the fall to gear up for the winter! I will be getting mine in October...BOO
