Flushing a Port

OK,, sorry the size was not 1/4 but 1/2.

Anyway I tried it again with the 3/4 needle and it flushed fine and I did get blood back.

However, is the needle supposed to stick out a little. I was not able to get it all the way in to the back end of the needle? It seem to hit the back of the port but I still have some of the needle sticking out. I am scared that maybe I am putting my IV's wrong.

Yes, you should have a small gap.

For reference, I can fold a 2x2 gauze in half and fit comfortably between my son's needle & his chest. In fact we do when we access as it makes it a bit more comfortable.

Beyond, that, I think you are getting the hang of it. Just give it some time and it will become 2nd nature.

Thanks Tom, I just finished the IV and was able to flush it. Was really worried that I was do this thing wrong.

Started to get a small panic attack.

I had my port for roughly 2 years, and the type (size and gauge) of huber needle that I used changed over that time. Initially they had me using a 22 gauge 1 inch needle. Then we changed to 22 gauge 3/4 inch. After my transplant I started having to use a 20 gauge 3/4 inch needle because the flushing was becoming difficult. By the time I got it taken out I was using a 19 gauge 3/4 inch needle.

Just wanted to put that out there because if it starts to get sluggish again that it may just require you trying to use a larger gauge needle
