For the CF women only...

Some women w/cf stop having periods because of low BMI (body max index - weight relative to height) or weighing too little. As sakasuka said, it is the body's way of taking care of itself. If the body cannot nourish itself, then it cannot nourish a baby too. Low weight causes hormones to become unbalanced and without certain hormones, you cannot ovulate. If you don't ovulate, there is no egg to fertilize (which creates an embryo). Also, those hormones are needed to build the lining in the uterus that would nourish the baby through pregnancy, which is what you shed each month with your period.

When you are on birth control pills it provides hormones that your body may not be producing, which explains normal periods (or shedding of the lining) during that time.

Also, you said your period comes every 1 or 2 weeks. If it comes every 2 weeks and alternates bewteen heavy and light, you could be having mid-cylce spotting (the light periods) that some women get when they ovulate. The heavy would be a regular period (the shedding of the lining). If your cyles are short, that could still be ovulation spotting one and a half to two weeks after your last period. Everyone's cycles are different and each person's cycle can be a little off from month to month.

These are just some possibilties as to what might be happening. Your ob/gyn will be able to answer your questions more, just thought this might help in the mean time.

The period stopping thing is NOT actually a CF thing, like stated above, it's a weight thing. Anyone whose weight dropped too low would cease to have a period. So there is a correlation with having CF but it's not CF=no period. I was curious about the lumps you mentioned? It is common in CF females to have (oh what do they call them...) a abnormality found during our GYN exam...some women end up having a biopsy that almost always comes back as nothing. It has to do with the mucus membranes that dwell there are like all the rest of the membranes in our bodies and you know CF and mucus membranes=wierdness. I am just mentioning this incase that is what you are referring to...it's not related to your bc. I had my CF doc call my GYN so now she feels better just keeping an eye on things instead of wanting to biopsy everything all the dang time.

And why are CF patients underweight? 98% of the time it's due to malabsporption or burning thousands of calories struggling to breath. So yes, stopping a period can be due to being under weight and being understand is almost all of the time due to CF.

All I was saying is not ALL CF folks have the weigh/malabsorption thing going on so again with the saying...all rectangles are squares but all squares are not rectangles. The weird period is a side affect for some with CF but it's not a given due to CF. I was not arguing with you (heaven forbid- I think I would rather run head first into a brick wall...and that would probably get more result..ha ha ha *sarcasm..funny just kidding with you*) I was only expanding on what you said.

In summary......female CFers with pancreatic insufficiency can be prone to not getting their periods because of BMI just like anerexics or anyone with severe weight loss or minimum BMI like atheletes. Not a direct "symptom" of CF itself, but a potential obstacle.

No. Mine are every 30 days like clockwork. However two things make them somewhat irregular: antibiotics and an occ. ovarian cysts. With anitibiotics I might be two weeks late. With my ovarian cyst, I would have about the same 30 days cycle but very heavy and lasting longer by a couple days. Typically my period is about 7 days long. Only three days of somewhat heavy flow.
