Okay...please explain "preventative medicine" as it relates to CF. Being new to CF, my only knowledge of preventative medicine is CPTs, enzymes, hand washing, and exercise. I've read again and again that many doctors don't practice preventative medicine, rather, they treat the CF patient when they get infections but do seldom to advise them prior to that time. Please share any "preventative" methods you practice...thanks so much!!!

I guess my being on oral antibiotics all the time, Tobi and whatever else inhaled med my Dr. will want me on is considered preventative. Actually they call it prophilactive which means to prevent so.... yeah i guess it does qualify....lol

I think preventative meds are anything that you do to prevent progression of the disease. Some do albuterol, HTS, Pulmo, etc. They don't do them only when they get sick, but daily. My son's Prev. meds are albuterol, Veramyst and Asmanex. He is supposed to start the HTS at his clinic visit next month.

When I think of reactive -- I think of our local clinic -- discourage any extra meds, testing... When DS cultured Steno Malt they opted not to treat it, let alone TELL us he had it. They encourage CPT only if the lungs are affected. I know a number of local patients who don't have a vest or do cpt. Even when DS did have a cough, we were told it was normal -- it's what they (CFers do). DS had bronchitis.

Vest/CPT -- minimum 2x a day -- we do at least 3, vitamins -- a CF multivitamin (ADEKS, ABDEKS, SourceCF), extra Vitamin K, A & E...

Trying to maintain a good weight due to the correlation between higher BMI and lung function.

Nebs -- bronciodialators to open up the airway such as albuterol, atrovent; pulmozyme to liquify mucus, hypertonic saline to hydrate the lungs; inhaled antibiotics such as Tobi; Mucomyst...

Oral antibiotics -- zithromax for inflammation, prophylactic... DS is on Keflex and septra as well...

Flu shots, handwashing...

Some people have talked about allergy testing, meds. Allergies can cause inflammation which can also cause issues...
