Forgive me for being moron...

Before my CF DX everything the docs had me do was reactive.... Mostly oral ABX in response to some sort of infection. Even things like Xopenex were to treat shortness of breath or 'chest tightness' symptoms. I had a MAC infection which led to a decline in my lung function and the docs had me on all sorts of ABX for 18 months.

The MAC eventually led me to second, third and even fourth opinions which finally resulted in my CF DX. My MAC went away - right about the time I got my CF DX.

After my CF DX (March 2008) and after I was off the MAC drugs for a few months, my CF docs put me on Pulmozyme and HTS even though I was not experiencing a flareup. Before I started those I was feeling pretty good, about my old baseline, maybe a bit worse, but attributable to 'not being in shape'. I was a bit hesitant since for 43 years I avoided drugs unless I really felt like crap. But now I'm soooo glad I'm taking pulmozyme and HTS. My lungs haven't been this clear of crud for many years.

You're definitely NOT a moron to ask this very valid question! I would definitely consider my Pulmozyme and HTS and airway clearance regimen "preventative medicine." One could debate whether HTS is medicine since it's just salt water... but that's a topic for another thread. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I work at keeping my acidity under control, which has helped me get off a bunch of anti-inflammatory drugs. I have made substantial dietary changes and lifestyle changes to support my health as much as possible and avoid infections as much as possible. I have eliminated most chemical cleaners from my home, won't use pesticides, avoid going into some stores that smell to high heaven of perfumes and crap, have eliminated MDF and particle board furniture from my home...and on and on. Too much stuff to really put in a single post. And it's late and I'm tired, so I'm going to give you the cop out answer of "check my website".

I guess the term preventative medicine means different things to different people. I like to practice what I call "protective measures" meaning doing anything to reduce exacerbations, reduce the severity of them, and try to feel as good as possible. I use meds and natural methods. I just want to be off antibiotics as much as possible because of them losing efficacy, the problem of developing candida infections, and all around being debilatated from them.

If you are interested, I've offered up some ideas on this topic on the other post "What is preventative medicine?"

And you're not a moron. None of us patients went to school for any of this. My problem is with the narrow-mindedness and in some cases arrogance (they know best, nobody can tell them anything) of tradionally trained doctors.

We are frequently left to fend for ourselves and each other.
