Fundraising for the CFF with the help of other organizations

What can I say I'm still learning the ropes. I seem to be unable to get passed the $10-15K range with my own network. This year I have registered my team as a national team though so hopefully friends all over the nation will join my fight.

I recently joined a women's club in hopes of learning the ropes of "big dog" fundraising and also getting their support with the CFF. After a SNAFU over the holidays, when I offered a stack of gently used boys pj's to a needy fund a lady was asking for donations for (evidently everything was supposed to be new with tags...I don't even by my own son new clothes??) now I seem to be denied being allowed to have an evening valentine's event to benefit the CFF through the club.

Here's my dialogue...thoughts?
Hey ________,

R, A and I had a good convo yesterday about the valentine's event but I couldn't help but feel it was overshadowed by news R gave me that it may be an issue that it benefits CFF.

When I had discussed it with you in early Nov it sounded like as long as the state CFF chapter does in fact keep money in state it shouldn't be a problem. Then I talked with the state CFF chapter and found out about the grants they give to local care centers.

2008 figures, our Care Centers received the following grants:
clinic 1- $xx,xxx
clinic 2 - $xx,xxx
clinic 3- $xx,xxx
clinic 4 -$xx,xxx

I reported about this at the Nov. meeting and also said the event would be benefiting the CFF based on this information. No one raised an issue. It's now end of December and I hear this may be an issue? UGH!

I've reviewed the club's Constitution and By-Laws, ___ Rules, as well as, the state club information. While there seems to be a precedence of gifting locally, there doesn't seem to be a requirement to do so exclusively. Although with the fact that the state CFF can keep the money in state I feel it's a mootpoint.

I digress, ___ on the other hand has offered support fiscally in the previous years to illnesses effliicting mankind as set forth by their department: "Health." which we in ____ seem to neglect IMHO. This is one of the 10 dep'ts and all ____'s are supposed to have them all available. Specifically, previous state projects were _____ Pediatric Pulmonary Program, SIDS, Lupus Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes and the list goes on (as noted under '____ History').

The two areas members may bring up as possible conflict I believe are Article 11.1-3 and the Mission Statement. Personally, The way I interpret these though should allow fundraising for the CFF. Not to mention a state chapter of the CFF.

Specifically, Article II.1-3 do not make any mention of fundraising but rather an objective of "bringing together women with the common interests of education, culture, community projects and humanitarianism." This is an objective of membership.
"Serving the residents of ____ with civic projects." This is achieved by the many events we have that are open to the ___________ public, membership in our club is open to the public and many events are very _____-centric.

I can see the argument if one says how does donating to state Chapter of the CFF "serve" ______. The answer as you've said is that people effected with cf would go to one of these clinics.

With regards to the mission statement: (All quotations reference the statement)
My event would "enrich the community," we'd be benefiting a "local support organization." After all if some one's little one is diagnosed at birth through state newborn screening for CF, that just passed in 2008, who are they going to turn to or be referred to? THE CFF and then one of these care centers. We'd be "raising awareness" about CF since after all it is the #1 genetic killer of children and young adults. 1 in 25 Caucasians are carriers. Certainly seems relevent to ___ to me. With proper preventative care it can be a much more manageable disease to live with. By getting a local prominent store involved in service we as a club are helping to show the community "the importance of service," by choosing the CFF we are showing our priority to "quality of life improvement" since CF'ers life expectancy is 36 years old and despite advancements in therapy often die very uncomfortable with their lungs filled with congestion unable to breath.

I think it is important for an organization to evolve as I know both you and R believe also by the small but very meaningful changes you've made to the club. Most importantly I think it's important in "friendship and (out of) respect" to take into consideration members interests no matter how "large or small." Perhaps this will result in a change bringing SWC back more in line with ___ objectives?!

I feel the collective efforts of the club with regards to the CFF could be much larger than my smaller team's efforts ($10-15K annually) comprised of our loved one's, both friends and family, do ourselves.

I look forward to helping and growing all the wonderful projects ___ already does and hope that this new mission can get the clubs support. Feel free to forward this email to whomever you'd wish and I'd be happy to discuss it as well.

Kindly,
Lauren

Sounds clear and to the point. And basically you're going to need clarification on those issues before investing any more time and energy into the organization. How frustrating that you've had to deal with it.

Not to be nitpicky though -- the former copy editor in me noticed a type under the "I digress" paragraph. Thinking it shouldn't be effliicting but afflicting. Though I'm sure your spell checker would catch it.

Good luck!

Oh, and I've gotten turned off as well when trying to make donations of some of DS' clothes, some of which have never been worn and am told they're not good enough. I've taken to GIVING his levis jeans to a person I know thru work for his grandson instead of trying to donate them.

I just don't know enough about these kind of organizations and fundraising efforts to be of any help here... I just wanted to say I am really sorry that they are 'blacklisting' you here over something as ridiculous as the pajama issue. I would definitely want to be sure they are willing to work with you pretty quickly without a lot of 'nitpicking' ...if they are the type of exclusive organization that is hard to break the ice with as a new member, it might not be worth the time and energy it would take to get their cooperation and real efforts to help you.

I wish the best that they end up being helpful!!

Lauren,

I am so sorry you are dealing with this. Sometimes women put into groups can get really catty and unreasonable. I think your letter is great and I hope it can help.

On another note, how do you register your team nationally? Is this new? I've always had people walking for Alyssa in many different states, but have never been able to register them alltogether before.
