Fungal Sinusits

I have been battling oral thrush for over three months now. I've tried Clotrimazole troches, Nystatin swish & swallow, 3 days of Diflucan, Orithrush mouthwash, gentian violet, and Biotene. With every remedy except the last two, the thrush went away for a week or so and would just come back. Now I'm on Diflucan for a month, and I am praying that will work.

Yesterday I also had sinus surgery. When I was still waking up, the ENT told my husband one of my sinuses (one below my eye) was completely full of fungal infection (and all nasty and *****). The other one below my eye had a bacterial infection.

Do you think the fungal sinus infection could have been causing the thrush? Anyone have this happen to them before?

Edit - I just saw that it blocked one of my words. I wasn't swearing. I was saying puss_y, as in, there was lots of puss from the infection <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

I do know that blocked sinuses are a real source for bacterial infections for the lungs. Why not fungal infections too? You know that thrush is a fungal infection (Candida as far as I know).

Blocked sinuses drain very slowly down into the lungs, so wouldn't the fungus from your sinuses drain onto your throat too? Which would explain why the meds would work temporarily -- sounds like you kept reinfecting yourself.

I think that you are really lucky. It looks like they found the source of your problem. Has your doctor ever prescribed sinus rinses or Probiotics (I take a 10-15 strain)? If not, may be worth discussing to see if they are right for you.

Candida can feed on the die off from infections. So you will tend to see more problems with yeast when you either are successfully killing an infection -- because there will be massive die off for the yeast to consume -- or when you have a really raging infection. It makes sense to me that when you had two raging infections in your sinuses, it caused bad yeast overgrowth in the mouth. Yeast overgrowth is more commonly found in the gut but can happen elsewhere. You may find that it is still a struggle to get it under control post-surgery because of the infection being killed. I would guess that it is not as bad after surgery because my understanding is they physically clean that stuff out. If you kill it with antibiotics, the die off all has to be processed out of the body somehow.

Anyway, I hope that makes some sense. I'm not feeling all that well this weekend and my posts can be completely incoherent when I don't feel well...and I usually don't realize it until I read it again at a later time. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
