Fungus problems without elevated IGE?

I've been having problems with wheezing and SOB. I did IVs, but my lung function went down, even though my sputum was reduced. My sputum culture tested positive for Aspergillus, but my IGE specific test for it was normal. The docs said I don't APBA because of the normal IGE test, but the wheezing is getting worse. I feel pretty good. I don't feel like I have an infection.

Is it possible to have a fungus cause wheezing without elevated IGE levels?

Any thoughts?

IgE is a test that measures how allergic you are to something. It's possible (although uncommon) to be culturing aspergillus but not be allergic to it. Are you currently on other meds such as ibuprofen, Advair, Prednisone or Foradil?

I appreciate your response.

They bumped my Advair from 110/50 to 500/50. The allergist tested my skin and there was no response to the aspergillus. No elevated IGE to it. Taking Celebrex for inflammation.

If you've had no response to the skin test, then the wheezing is the result of something else. Now that summer is in full swing, you could be having some other type of allergic reaction to environmental factors.

The increased wheeze is likely to be the result of the mucus breaking apart and thinning out. I experience the same thing shortly after IVs. Initially, the mucus is so thick and there's so much of it that air cannot move through it enough to even cause a wheeze. Once I can get some air moving again, I tend to wheeze. Be sure to keep up with your bronchodilators to open you up, and work hard at airway clearance. The more stuff you can get out, the better. Once the mucus moves or shifts, the wheezing may subside. You probably just have some residual gunk in there that hasn't found its way out yet.
