g-tube issue

I had the same issue with my G-tube. Burning, itching, leaking. I found these wonderful waterproof band-aids that I would put over the site. Only problem is, over time this ends up irritating the area where you put the band-aid. I would actually end up with blisters and very bright red, raw skin from peeling the band aid off. It was miserable. I found that it leaked too the most after a big meal, or when I was out partying. I constantly ruined my nice clothes and always had a little acid spot on my shirts right where my g-tube was. So in short, there really is nothing you can do to make that situation better besides taking it out. My g-tube was a Mickey button and my doctors suggested me getting the one with the balloon on the inside so that it would stay more flush to the inside of my stomach and not leak. I'm stubborn though and wanted the flattest button possible on the outside. Getting my g-tube out was probably the happiest moment of my life after transplant. I hated that thing.

Cariann, one of my sons has the same problem with his g-tube button. He has a bard too. We found that if you cover it, the leaking acid makes your skin raw. We now use a split-sponge gauze pad. Just slide it under the button.

Bacitracin doesn't work very well on the redness. There is a powder that we got from our GI nurse that helped keep it dry. Its called Stomahesive.

No one is sure why it leaks. The first one didn't and my other son's never does. very annoying!!!

I would love to have mine taken out! the drs wont take it out jsut incase i need to get a transplant down the road that that will be a plus to geting the surgery! In the remark i told them that if and when i get a transplant then they can just put one in at the same time i am under! I just cant stand to have this stupid thing any more! I have used band-aids, the waterproof ones and the regular one! I was using them on a day to day basis but then i got the welts and stuff that you guys were talking about! so i only use them when i am wearing a tight shirt or a white shirt or formal dress or something! thanks for all the replys sorry that it does the same to other people too! these damn things i swear!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Cariann,
I have had two Gtubes and a button in the past year.... so with my experience all I can tell you is I had much better luck with my Gtubes that actually hang like a cord from the stomach as opposed to my button (that was flat against the skin) when it came to leakage. I had my first Gtube placed and had it for about a month and asked for a button that goes against the stomach. Once I had that placed I had your same probelms: constant leakage, pain and irritation at the sight, even some inside stomach lining came out and all in all it was trouble. I always got my shirts gross. Anyhow, that button lasted about 2 mths and accidentally came out of my stomach, which was good for me in the end. I now have the original Gtube that hangs from the stomach and have had NO leakage problems at all! Thank Goodness, so apparently the surgeon did a good job. Even when I am super full it doesn't leak, no soreness at the sight or any other problems. I think some surgeons are better then others when it comes to placing them, and if they are a bit out of wack, can give you major issues like my previous one did. Hope you can get the problem fixed!
