Gallbladder Surgery Followup Appt

I had my followup today and the surgeon said I have the thickest bile they have ever seen. He couldn't even suction it out of the gallbladder like they usually do because it was so thick!

He did say I still may form stones in the future even though I don't have a gallbladder-they would form in the bile duct and in order to get them out they would have to go down through my mouth. He said the pain would be just like the pain I had.

Yikes! So-I am hoping I don't have this happen. I asked him if there is anything I can do to prevent it....he said not really.

I am on Ursidoil to thin the bile and drinking lots of water all day to avoid the "bile stones" that can happen after gallbladder removal. I had them once and got a blockage and a resulting infection, and spent some time in ICU a lovely banana color. I don't advise going that route to get put on Ursidoil <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0"> . Since I started the Ursidiol and drinking more water, I've only had twinges of stone pain (especially if I forget to take my Ursidiol <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0"> ). Are you on Ursidoil (also called Actigall)? If not, I would ask to find out why not. Good luck!

Thanks for the info Andee! I didn't have any gallbladder issues until I had my first (super bad!) attack-then had it taken out less than a week later.

I will ask my CF doctor about the actigal - I haven't seen him since my surgery-I will be sure to tell him what my surgeon said. Are there any side affects from the actigall or is it an ok med?

I haven't had any issues since getting my gallbladder out 3 weeks ago (knock on wood!).

I was also told after my gall bladder removal last summer that I could form stones again in the duct. 1 month after I had my gb out I had the same "attack" pains. I was scheduled for an ECRP (the procedure to remove stones from the duct that goes through your mouth) a week later so I just waited it out - they had put in a stent during ordeal and were going to remove it. I had A TON of stones in my duct from my bad gall bladder. It took the doc 2 hours to get them all out. And he kept saying they were like plastic and kept tearing the balloons he was using. He said that if I form more stones and he goes in again he wants to use wire baskets instead of the balloons (they didn't have the baskets at the hospital I was at).

BTW, the ECRP is done via edoscopy. They can get as far as the duct opening but then must use live xray to guide a guide wire into the duct where they can then introduce the instruments to clear stones, cut away tumors, etc. It is VERY technical and has carries a high risk of angering the pancreas and causing post-ERCP pancreatitis. My GI doc also told me my ducts were at strange angles and I was hard to get into. If you ever need an ECRP done find the best GI in town - don't settle for anyone less. Later when I researched what all was involved I was VERY happy that I *did* have the best guy around.

As long as I take it with food (and I think I'm not supposed to take it with my vitamin, which I don't, but it's been so long I forget why I don't take it with my vitamins, lol), I don't have any issues. It can cause a bit of stomach irritation (at least for me, but I have a sensitive stomach <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> ) without food. Other than that, no side effects <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> .
