I have a fabric mask that is relatively comfortable to wear and breathe through-

http://www.breathehealthy.net/

And I also do container gardening for my veggies, and put them on the deck, in front of the windows, so I remember to water them . There is less digging and weeding with the containers .

I have a flower garden I agree with Sally. When i was first diagnosed with that darned aspergilloma ( fungus ball) i remember reading about aspergillus being in the dirt and carpeting etc. i asked my Dr. if i should get rid of all my house plants, my area rugs, wear a mask and gloves to garden etc., and she said she didnt want me to live in a concrete home. It's one thing to take obvious precautions, but not to go crazy over it. I did get rid of a few large houseplants, but also kept a lot of them. I dont always wear a mask when gardening, but i do usually wear gloves because i always seem to find the poison ivy, even when it cant be seen. Caution is always a good thing, but if we avoided every single thing they say has any type of germs or bacteria in it, we would not be able to do anything or go anywhere. Like Sally said germs are everywhere. Its an unavoidable problem. I've also heard about refrigerators harboring aspergillus ( not all of them , just the one they did testing on) Now should we all get rid of our refrig's in case ours has it too? Its unfortunate but the world is full of germs and we have to find a balance with it. Keeping your hands clean is probably the most important way to do that. Handwashing is the most effective means of avoiding germ problems.

When my boys grew that new myco bacteria, the docs said it is found in agricultural soil. Our doctors told the boys to stay away from airborn dirt. Wearing a mask is probably a good idea especially if you are pouring bags of dirt, raking or shoveling dirt or if the wind is blowing the dirt into the air.
