Gardening

Yesterday, while working to re-establish a garden - turning over soil, picking out weeds and putting new plants into the garden I began to wonder what might be in the soil I was tossing around. So, in the midst of my spring energy I began to worry about the potential bacterial lurking in the dirt. Any reason to be concerned?

Molds. There've been several news stories the past few years in our area about perfectly healthy individuals doing gardening and developing a nasty lung infection.

Yep, Aspergillus is known to be in dirt also, as well as other bacteria and molds. I have aspergillus and a fungus ball ( aspergilloma), and love to do my gardening, so these days, i wear a mask and gloves when i start "playing in the dirt". Also leaves are a culprit of mold and bacteria, so if you are raking leaves make sure to wear a mask.

I have aspergillus also. My doc said since I love to garden to wear a mask, and to use an anti bacterial soap as soon as I'm done...

Hi Laura,

you are 53 despite cf, so what are you worried about? It will not have been your first time in the garden...so if you are vaccinated against tetanus, my opinion is: don´t worry, live your life as you have done it until now...<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Isnt psuedomonas found in dirt also? I know when I rake leaves if they are all wet and smell moldy I dont mess with them, instead I have my husband do that, but if the leaves are dry then I have no problem with raking leaves up. When I work outside Im always paranoid about cathing something as well, but I think I should wear a mask while outside too, I think my husband should too. I do wear gloves but never a mask, I need to look into that.

Yes, myco-bacteria are environmental. Our doctor was concerned about the (airborne) dirt the boys were exposed to when they contracted their bacteria. We had to test the all soil the kids were exposed to on a regular basis (garden, sand box, yard) etc. It is everywhere!

People who have weakened immune systems are at greater risk from contracting infections from mycobacteria.

I'd wear a mask when gardening, or keep the dust at a minimum by watering first.
