I've heard that one of the more exciting topics at the National CF conference last week was with regards to some gene therapy that is starting trials in humans soon. The great news is that its supposed to be pretty safe which is great since the last time gene therapy went to trials I think it killed a few. Anyone know more info on this and care to share this upbeat news with us?

Yikes - "killed a few"? I understand the importance of clinical trials...but I have a really difficult with the thought of my daughter being part of an "experiment". <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> It's a tough call though - especially with so few patients to test. I hope these gene therapy results are promising!!

I wonder if they're referring to matching treatments with certain genetic mutations. Like the vertex studies for 770 and the one for double deltaf508.

I do seem to recall hearing about a couple patients in the older gene therapy studies and so studies were halted.

No idea what happens in the US. But they are working on it in the UK: Run-in (patient evaluation) started in February 2008. Then a Phase IIa study with 100 participants will follow (not mutation related).
