Generic drugs from India...

I recently changed insurance plans from Blue Cross Blue Shield to Aetna.

I haven't ordered any meds yet but we got my husband's prescription today and it said the manufacturer was Dr. Red. DH is in pharmaceutical development so he knew this meant it was from a company in India named Dr. Reddy's. Here is their site. http://www.drreddys.com/

Am I misguided to feel that this product might be inferior? Do these companies uphold the same quality control the American pharma's do? Ugh!

Any drug that ends up in the pharmacies in the United States is FDA approved to be sold here.

This means that manufacturing standards, quality controls, etc are regulated by the US government.

Dr. Reddy's is an Indian based company, yes. But guess what? That Allegra you take or the Nasacort AQ you take is from a French company. Your TOBI is from a Swiss company. Take Rozerem or Actos? That's Japanese.

All these companies must abide by US FDA rules to sell here.

So bottom line: if you got your drug from a US pharmacy, rest assured, quality is just as good as any other generic you purchase

Thanks for the info Amy. I'm glad to hear India is as trustworthy as the other more developed countries you mention that the US imports drugs from. It was my own naivete to think it wasn't up to snuff. I guess more importantly your post makes me realize how much the FDA really does control. I'm happy I posted this and feel much better about it.

Amy pretty much covered it but one other aspect is. Example I work at Pfizer and any of our major drugs are overseas at some piont. The basic way they do it is any 'blockbuster' that they have meaning a million or more dollars a year in sales will be produced and such overseas because they can tax shelter it (then once it lowers in sales it comes to where I work and the oversease get next blockbuster that was developed here in US -- nice eh?). We do alot of our work in Ireland or Puerto Rico or Singapore so even though alot stuff goes on here in US even a company based in US isnt necessarily sending or making your drugs in US. And yes Amy's right that we all have the same FDA regulations so it doesnt matter if we send product to singapore they will do the same testing adn meet the same requirements etc. I would assume that is the same thing with your company you are speaking of. As long as it is going through the US system and you are not driving to Canada to pick up drugs or soemthing you should be all set.
