GERD?

I have recently had some issues and I wondered if I may have GERD or somthing similar.
Lately, I've had a taste in my mouth almost all the time. Sometimes it's a good, sweet taste & other times it tastes rotten, to be frank about it.
I was thinking it could be a breath/oral hygiene thing but I promise I do brush often!! Then 5 minutes after I brush, there's that taste again. It's like in the back of my mouth/throat area.
Well, last night I awoke at 3:30 a.m. & had an acid-y burning feeling in the back of my throat and I kept coughing. Water didn't help but a couple of Tums took the acid taste/feeling away and the need to cough subsided. This is not a normal nightly occurrence for me....it couldn't have been the spaghetti & 4-5 pieces of garlic bread I ate for dinner, could it??<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> lol

Anyway, all this got me to thinking....I wonder if things are backing up quite frequently and that explains the different taste I get sometimes???

What about some of you with GERD...what were your symptoms that lead you to be diagnosed with GERD?

I was actually just diagnosed with GERD and prescribed Nexium about 2 weeks ago.

I was having a nagging cough, sore/scratchy throat, I could feel acid coming up, I was short of breath (not overly - as I was having problems with severe shortness of breath last week too - but they do not think they were related) I also had/have positional wheezing.

I was having wheezing when I lay down and when I would bend over -- if my head got below my waist. My doc said that happens on occasion because the flap that covers the esophagus can become weak - from all of our coughing and the puffs of air constantly being pushed up from our stomach/diaphragm (sp?). He said that when that flap becomes weak it can sometimes fall open slightly when we are in certain positions and acid can come up and cause lung issues such as wheezing and shortness of breath.

If you are on any different meds some meds can make this worse. I know some of the antibiotics I was on this IV stint can cause issues with GERD depending on certain types of foods - at least that is what the doc indicated to me. Maybe double check med side effects if you think that could be part of the problem. It may help clue you in as to why it is happening now if it doesn't usually occur.

Take Care,
Lindsey

Thank you for your response.
When they started you on Nexium, did they mention OTC stuff that would basically do the same job that Nexium does?
I'm thinking that OTC meds would be cheaper than my $30 co-pay for prescription drugs.

My docs did not mention OTC stuff - but I have multiple insurances that cover the copays so they may not have brought it up for that reason. Also I am not sure of the cost of say Prilosec but I have heard that it is expensive - it may end up costing more buying OTC meds than just getting a script so I would double check before you turn down the script. Also you could ask your doc to right the script for at minimum 30 days that way you are essentially paying 1 buck a day for the med ... instead of like 2 weeks at a time.

I don't know the difference in the OTC meds and Nexium as I haven't looked into it. So I can't offer advice in that respect.
