Its not recommended, but it can be done. Doctors usually prefere your PFTs to be no lower then about 60% sometimes even 55%. But you can still carry to term at 47%, you would just have more hospital stays and checkups.

i heard about a CFer who had pretty low FEV1 and got pregnant. she was in her lower 20s. he doctors had advised her against it, but she went ahead anyway. she had a vaginal birth and the baby and her are doing just fine.

Hmm.. well I really wouldn't know about this because I am only 16 and I have never been pregnant but I do have LOW PFTS! I think that it's mainly a matter of motivation, and setting your goals. If you are willing to take care of yourself 110% while being low... you have to be willing 200% with the baby. I mean, it's pretty much common sense. If you are pregnant.. (because you didn't say so or not..) I would definatly advise you do more treatments daily, excersize more often... and definatly keep those airways open! Whats better for you is best for the baby. Good luck <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

To make the pregnancy easier for everyone (Mom, Baby & Caring Physicians for both) the healthier you are & the better your lung function, the more they like that. BUT its not impossible or unheard of. Its definitely an individual decision based on each person!

Hi all! My first post as I am new to the board.

When I got pregnant my fev1 was running about 30-33%. My pft's actually improved during pregnancy. However, even though my pft's were kinda poor, they had been steady for several years and hadn't been on too many IV antibiotics. I did go into preterm labor at 28 weeks; but I don't know if that was cf related. I ended up on bed rest and ended up delivering at 36 weeks. I had a vaginal delivery with no complications. My health has declined though since then but that was 7 years ago and it more than likely doesn't have anything to do with having a baby. I also don't have to use enzymes. There are so many factors and everyone is different. My pregnancy was unexpected although I wasn't trying to prevent it. I have never used any birthcontrol but it still took 9 years. I got pregnant again 2 1/2 years after the birth of my first child but I miscarried.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Julie

I don't mind you asking...stupide me I should have included that anyway! I was 31 when I got pregnant. My son doesn't have cf but he is a carrier.

I just had a baby last year, I was 32. My Fev1 was at about 42%. Soon after birth of my son my Fev1 dropped to about 27%, am on 02 24/7 and can't seem to get them back up. I am now being evaluated for transplant.

Thank you to all for posting your comments... I am not pregnant yet, but i do plan on trying to conceive... the only problem well one of the problems is that women problems run in my family and i am very very irregular (periods!). My mom and my sister both had to use fertility drugs to help them conceive... so there is a huge chance with me that i will have to do the same to be able to get pregnant.. but i think that over all i will try my hardest and if it happens it was ment to be but if it doesnt then i guess it was metn to be too! so anyways, thanks again for all your input...

Hi anon,

My FEV1 is 42% and my husband and I are currently trying to get pregnant. The thing is I feel great! I am exercising and eating right and doing my treatments. Of course I am trying t get my FEV1's up but if it doesn't happen I know I will be okay- I feel healthy and I feel it is the right time.

My doc advised that she would not recommend it but she would support my decision. So I am going for it.

Also CF only effects my lungs- I am also not on any enzymes. I am 30 years old-

I just found this thread as i was looking for people who had conceived or was trying to conceive... I also have had female issues (very irregular periods) I was wondering if i should take like clomid to try and get pregnant? My fev1 is also around 45% not the best and my doc advises me not to get pregnant but my husband and i are gonna try to get pregnant and if it happens then it happens if not then i will be ok with that too! But i was just wondering what will help increase my chances of having a kid since i am so irregular! my mom and sis both took clomid to get pregnant so maybe I need to get on that too. I guess you dont have to have a prescription for it... and my doc wont give it to me or even talk about me getting prego so if anyone had info that would be so greatful... thanks

Since everybody's having happy time, I thought I'd share this quick cautionary tale. I'm not saying DON'T since your mind is made up, but I'm sharing. I have been talking to a widower whose wife had low PFts, 50ish, I think and decided to go for it. A few months after the baby was born, she was gone. Now the dad is raising a little girl by himself. Can your husband raise this child by himself? That, you for sure need to know.

Are you wanting to get pregnant so you can have a baby or so you can have a 10 year old child? Those cute babies grow into cute kids that have their own opinions and attitudes so getting pregnant and having a baby is the easy part--raising a child while not being 100% healthy and wondering how much longer you have
is the hard part.
Just food for thought
