Getting Sick From Having Port Accessed?

Kelli

New member
OK, well went to clinic yesterday and they want to start meds. So I got my port accessed (in my chest) and that went just fine.

Well I'm still waiting for my meds to show up (I'm doing meds at home.....so I haven't started anything) and I'm so sick. I did this last time.

I have fever (100.9), chills, nausea, headache, tired, etc.

Does anyone ever feel like this. Like I said, I was so sick last time before my meds started. I think I'm having a reaction to the needle in my chest. I called last time and they said, it might be my body releasing toxins and that is causing flu-like symptoms.

Any advice would be helpful. Now I'm going to go lay down to get warm again!!!!

Thanks,|

If you called last time and it was the exact same thing then i think i would call again.
Just to let them know it is happening again, the same thing at the same time.

Maybe they will know some more..

Maybe they will know that it could be something like a reaction to the needle (if that's possible).

I would let them know anyway, cause it doesn't sound right i think...

Good luck! I hope this feeling will go away soon and that your iv meds will kick in soon and make you feel even better

Big hug!

I'm not sure what is going if it is before your meds. I know that for years I would have chills, a fever, and severe vomiting for the first day or so of IVs, and my doctor would always say it was just my system trying to cleanse with the antibiotics. It took forever before we finally found out it was an allergic reaction to one of the antibiotics I was always doing, and since we've stopped I have never had that issue again. Is it possible you have an allergy to something they use to access your port, even the betadine or the dressing itself? I very much like and respect my doctor, but sometimes they all seem a bit overly ready to attribute any and all symptoms to CF (releasing toxins, bacteria, etc), when in reality is something far more simple, like an allergy. Keep mentioning it and ask direct questions of your doctor and nurses (e.g., "I know my body, and these flu like symptoms aren't normal for me, yet they seem to happen every single time I have my port accessed. I'm concerned it may be an allergy or other non-CF related reaction. What sort of tests would you recommend?" If you are proactive about your own symptoms you often get better treatment.

Just wondering how you're doing now??? Hope the iv's are working!

And did you find anything out about the 'allergic' reaction?
