gifts in hospital

Just wondering, what would be your favorite gift if you were in hospital. Trying to get some ideas for a gift basket.

Well, seeing as how I'm a girl, I'd say that I'd love a carepackage that was full of a couple of washclothes, mini shampoos and lotions, maybe some nail polish or something like that. Sort of like a mini spa package. I also collect old Harlequin romances from the 70s and Archie comic books, so if the person that's in hospital is a reader, and enjoys certain books or comics, you could buy a whole wack of them from a second hand book store - very cheap.

I haven't been a patient, since I'm pretty healthy-non cf, but things I notice that patients here ask for: 1) Good mouthwash, not the hospital brand--your mouth gets so dryand maybe a toothbrush. 2) A nice pillowcase-something to make you feel good, cheerful, or, if female-pretty. 3) If your not sick to your stomach, nice smelling soap to wash with. Soft toilet paper and kleenex--not the hospitalcheapie stuff. 4) Maybe some writting supplies, if they like to write. 5) Definitely current magazines, sometimes you don't feel like a book. 6) Game books like crossword puzzles, word search, suzuko. 7) If the hospital has a VCR or DVD player, new tapes. This could be put in a nice wicker basket that they could use at home. Hope this helps.

Coloring Books. I always love coloring books. My friends normally bring me a few. I like the marker ones and usually they have to throw in the markers as well.

Any type of snack food. Normally when I am admitted they have me on a diabetic diet and won't change it even if I beg, so I get really no calories/sugars/carbs from the hospital food. I normally get friends to bring cereal, cookies, muffins .. anything with flavor that has some calories in it.

Sudoku or puzzle books and magazines are great too.

I used to love those marker posters when I was little. I think everyone knows what I am talking about. The ones with the black fuzzy stuff on them. The black stuff always got EVERYWHERE, but I loved them. If the gift is for a child that could be something fun. They still sell them at craft stores like Micheals and I have seen them at Target.

I agree with all of the above. When I am in the hospital I just love to be thought of. I love balloons and flowers. I also like ppl to bring me Diet Snapple Iced Tea and snacks to put in my draw in case I get hungry. I am usually starving from all the steroids.

Also for a girl, I love the soap, and fun smelly stuff. FOr a guy, I would think if he has a DVD or something, some movies

So sweet of you to make a basket,

Jennifer

Thanks for all the great suggestions! This is for a female around 30 yrs, I don't know her so it is hard to personalize it. I have been lucky enough this last year to be on the recieving end of many kind act this year and have found an opportunity to be on the other end. Keep the ideas coming.

A pillow and soft pillowcase is a great idea, I hate those plastic hospital pillows. Also, puzzle books, magazines, crafts, ie needle point, scrapbooking materials and patients pictures from home, etc.

cute socks, phone card, universal remote for the tv (hospitals usually just have that infuriating up/down button), lip gloss, etch-a-sketch, anti-bacterial wipes, scrunchies or cute hair clips, nail file

One time, when my cousin was hospitalized for cancer treatments, we put together a "beach-in-a-box".

We packed coconut sun lotion, ice tea, beach towel, flip-flops, beach ball, inflatable palm tree, sun glasses, beach boys and jimmy buffet CDs all in a huge beach bag. Very fun!!!

I have a whole wack of them, and I bought a whole bunch of them to bring with me when I was in last month. Its amazing how many you can breeze through in a short time when you're laid up in hospital.

I would say magazines like most people said and maybe some movies. Also, during my recent hospital stays I have been bringing a picture of someone that I admire or who inspires me. So to get my mind off other "things" I just look at the picture to bring me good thoughts. I put the picture near my bed. it can be anyone you want. Ask your friend who she admires alot. This may sound not helpful but thats ok. it helps me. I just thought I would mention something in my own way.
