well when i started BC, if i remember correctly, my dr had me start it the sunday after i ended my period. so... starting it on the first day of your period does not sound right. are you sure thats what she/he told you to do?

I too have not heard of starting your Birth control on the day you start your period. I was told when I started ages ago to take it the first sunday after my period. Hmmm...maybe you should talk to your doctor again! Plus if you have been on any antibioitcs (oral or IV) lately they could screw up your period too!

Okay I looked on my pill packet insert and it says:

Day 1 Start (any day during the week other than Sunday that you want to start)
1. pick the day label strip that starts with the first day of your period (this is the day you start bleeding or spotting, even if it is almost midnight when bleeding begins)
2. place the label on the top
3. Take the first white (or whatever color of active pills are) pill of the first pack during the first 24 hrs of your period.

Sunday Start
1. Take the first white (or whatever color of active pills are) on the Sunday after your period starts, even if you are still bleeding. IF your period begins on Sunday, start the pack that same day.

Okay, that said, they pills are not gonna work right away to regulate your period. It will probably take a few months, i think usually 3 months, before you period is regulated by the pills. If you feel something isnt right, call your OBGYN and ask the Dr or the Nurse if this is normal.

Added: It also may take a few tries on different pills before you find one to do what you need. I had the 12-14 day problems before starting and I went through 5 different Brands (different hormone levels in each brand) and a Leep procedure before my problem was under control. Now it last about 3-5 days.

You can start on any day that you want. They used to say Sunday all the time because for a lot of people its just easy to remember to start that day. Personally for me its easier to remember on Monday because of the way my work schedule is.

12 days does seem like a long time though. What is normal for you? Have your periods been irregular before? I started BC when I was 17 for extememly irregular periods and it took a couple of months for things to straighten out.
