Gross Girly Problem

You were warned.

Okay, so I have the worst vagina in the world for yeast. Yeast love it here and it's really pissing me off. I'm not on ANY antibiotics right now (except for Colistin, but that's inhaled, and I'm not getting yeast in my mouth...). Not a single one. And still, always with the yeasty vagina.

It's weird, too. If I'm not on antibiotics, they only get half-@ssed. They kind of come on... enough to be heinously itchy, but not enough to create that god-awful smell and not very much of the "cheesy" stuff (I'm not trying to be gross, I don't know how else to describe it). I notice it coming on, take care, clean extra, and take acidophilus and it lays off before too long. This is, of course, without getting to full on yeast vagina demolition (read: full yeast infection worthy of Diflucan or Monistat).

I'm not wearing anything but cotton panties... I'm not avoiding showers, or on any antibiotics. So someone smart... what in the hell is my problem???

I can't offer you any answers here. Do you eat yogurt? The active cfultures are supposed to help. Maybe you should talk to gyn if you haven't already.

I agree that the active cultures in yogurt can help such things. A friend of mine had a similar problem and her gyno has her eat 1 serving a day and it works wonders for her. So, something you could try.

Yogurt isn't a huge option for me because I think it's mostly gross. I'm a pain. I can go back to eating the strawberry banana and banana cream ones. Those were good. Peach wasn't bad either. Haha.

And I have no obgyn as of right now, because I haven't seen the need to see one since they cut out my uterus and cervix.

I'd love a fix to the problem, but at this point, I'm just hoping for the answer to why. I'll worry about fixing it after I figure out why!! Driving me nuts. I can see no reason for it. Rarrrr.

But thanks ladies!

Not a medical person here, so don't know how scientific my info is, but I have definitely had my share of yeast infections. While most have followed IV antibiotics, many times they come out of nowhere. Sometimes I can link them to stress, sometimes to a grossly unbalanced diet filled with way too much sugar and starch (my two favorite food categories). Yogurt and acidopholis are helpful. The one thing that always does the trick for me is lots of cranberry juice. I know, I know. Many articles say there's not tons of scientific evidence that it works. All I know is that when I drink it, the yeast infections go away. Good luck. I know how irritating they are.

Genetics do play a role. Sometimes there is no "why" if you're just genetically predisposed to having a lack of what keeps yeast under control. I know many families that yeast infections run in and they're not CFers OR on antibiotics or any of the "usual" suspects. I know it doesn't help you any, but some people just have 'em and have to live with 'em. Sorry. I know they suck big time.

I would recommend taking ant-yeast supplements that contain Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Lactobacillus Rhamnosus. There are many different brands out there but make sure it is refrigerated to maintain maximum strength. They come in capsule form and you take 2 a day on an empty stomach. That why the capsule absorbs the yeast throughout our body not from the yeast you just ate in your last meal. Doctors and others say to eat lots of yogurt. But honestly, yogurt has live and active cultures, but it is filled with sugar. Check the label. Sugar feeds yeast. So in the end, you're really not doing anything. Simple carbohydrates like pasta and pizza and any sugars feed yeast. You should try to avoid some of them until you can get things under control.

I always had yeast infections. Oral and below. I got them orally from inhaled TOBI and Flovent and below from any oral or IV meds. Sometimes, like you, I had them for no reason. My aunt, who is a herbal specialist, recommended the anti-yeast supplements. They worked like a charm. I take them everyday whether or not I'm on an antibiotic or have a current infection. And when I stop them or run out, I notice getting itchy within 2 weeks.

All female CF patients should be on this. Many have no idea. Yeast infections can really mess up things too, whether you know you have one all the time or not. Mine were so bad that there were times I'd have my annual Pap and pelvic and the doctor would tell me at the end that I had an infection. That WAS embarassing!!! But anyway, yeast infections change your cervical mucus. They would make it near impossible to tell when you're ovulating. Also, they prevent conception, if you are trying to conceive. Plus if you get them frequent enough, they can do mild damage that won't go away.

Another note, I don't know if you are on the pill, but they can cause yeast infections too. That was another source of my problem. I discontinued the pill and that really reduced infections. Also if you don't get regular periods, your constant changing hormones can help an infection occur.

I hope this helped!!

Lots of good advice here. I get yeasties a lot in the summer (not sure if its the heat, bathing suit, the change in diet?) My doctor said use monistat once a week, instead of the 7-day treatment. One suppository overnight. That usually helps.

Also, although I've never done this, using plain yogurt to cleanse "the area". Or, if you have any of the nystatin swish and swallow, you could use that, just don't swallow from that end.

Hi Jane,

Monistat stopped working for me long ago. I'm immune to it. Diflucan doesn't work anymore either. I don't get yeast infections anymore, but when I did, I was placed on a heavy-duty cream for 10 days straight.

Not to be gross, but yes the yogurt to cleanse the area was "nice". I tried that 2 years ago when I was sooooo bad. For me, it didn't cure the problem. However, it relieved the itch and burning for hours. It would be a consideration with a cream or pill. You have to make sure, though, that the yogurt is "plain". I got Dannon brand. I was told to sit in it for 20 minutes then rinse with warm/cool water. Sorry to be graphic but if that helps, good.

I've heard that you can get yeast infections from wearing tight pants and not having enough breathing room "down there". Sweating a lot also causes yeast.

Hi Emily

For some reason or another I have had some yeast infections too but not as bad as you described. I have been able to control them with diet and the use of tea tree oil suppositories. I cannot use monistat or diflucan. I get an allergic reaction and I get congested. Very strange and scary stuff from monistat.

I discovered the use of Tea tree oil three years ago and the next morning after I used it, I even felt that my breathing was improved (during the chronic rejectin phase) Yeast can make someone feel bloated, congested and one can have many headaches too. It is not a good thing to have and in some cases it can lead to serious health issues.

I would start to watch your sugars like Jennifer stated. She speaks volumes and I would have written the same. Sugar breeds yeast.

I would SERIOUSLY consider buying this product. I just bought fifteen boxes yesterday and I hope it will last a year or so. I only use this daily for six days if I think I have an infection. After intercourse I use one as well as it restores the natural balance.

If this does not work for you, I will take back my words lol

This is the cheapest price out there. If you go into whole foods you can pay up to twelve dollars for a pack of six. Here is it six dollars and change.

I sometimes use this in my rectum if I get a bad stomach and it works like a charm. I am trying to convince my doctor to try and use these after surgery on their transplant patients.

Just wanted to say that I bought so many boxes of tea tree oil because I love using tea tree oil suppositories during the times of doing the man and woman thing. I found it increases the feeling of being in the moment for both of us and the sensation feels very good. Nothing like it out there.

Risa, you insert it before sex then and it melts away during sex? You also mentioned using it after sex to 'balance' the vagina out. Is there any limit on using this stuff? Then you use it for a week if you have an infection? Wow. I'll have to give this stuff a try. Any reasons to not use it during pregnancy?

I'm not a cfer but I somehow got "chronic yeast". They put me on a regimen of one diflucan a week for 6 months. It is working wonders!!

This is kind of to add to Terri's post.

I was the one that mentioned Summer's Eve last night in chat. I usually get yeast infection when I am on antibiotics for extended periods of time. Well a few years ago I decided to get Summer's Eve for what reason I am not really sure - I can't recall.

I started using it and noticed that after my first hospitalization when I was using it I didn't get a yeast infection. No big deal really what's one time - I have been hospitalized three times since I started using it and haven't had a yeast infection at all in those times. I have actually only had one yeast infection that stuck around (since starting to use the cleanser) and that was cause I had several small cuts from sand that had gotten in my bathing suit at the beach - but even then that went away after a few days once the cuts healed.

I am not really sure why or what about it would cause me to NOT have yeast infections, but I will not buck the system so long as it keeps working.

Hi Lauren

Great questions. I would not use tea tree oil suppositories during sex if I had an active yeast problem. Sex and yeast infections are not advisable. You can spread it to your partner.

So when I would use the suppositories for sex it was just for the effect as it is feels good for both parties. I would not use it again after sex. Either before or after. Too much of anything will not work after time. It melts completely within five to ten minutes. It can be used as a lubricant but I am not sure the effect on condoms and tea tree oil. I believe it is not a wise idea.

I think it is great for after sex. I had a friend who had major yeast problems and once she started using these suppositores she was free of the yeast. ME TOO

I would not use anything if you are a pregnant. I do not think anything is safe for that.

Follow directions on box. It says take two per day morning and evening.
