Gums and Teeth

So I have receding gums. Only under one tooth and only a little bit so far. I'm sure it's mild. My dentist has told me they are not receding anywhere, and they were just a little inflamed by that tooth. Quite frankly, I don't believe him. The gums are lower than my tooth, and I can get my fingernail under the edge of the tooth, and it's very sensitive there. It LOOKS like they're receding, for crying out loud.

Anyways. I have a feeling it has something to do with meds. My nebs perhaps, or lack of vitamins. Something like that. For the record, I take Pulmozyme, HTS, and Colistin (and that one makes my mouth particularly fuzzy, I wonder if it's that one).

I have been brushing, I have been using mouthwash, I have been flossing. All much more religiously than I used to (I haven't been doing it too long, only two weeks or so --- should I have seen SOME results by now?). And nothing is different. I'm looking to see if anyone has similar experiences... or suggestions, or whatever. I don't want my gums to all erode away. It's really gross. Help!

can't excessive brushing cause receding gums? my friend recently had to get some gum graphed to the front because he had receding gums. he never smoked, and he told me he thinks it was due to excessive brushing when he was younger.

Yeah I heard that as well. I have an electric tooth brush, but unless I'm removing Cheetos junk from my teeth, I use my regular tooth brush with the softer bristles. For just that reason. And my gums are still totally lame. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

Just as is the case with our other body fluids having trouble maintaining the proper chloride levels, our saliva, especially when combined with our nasty meds, can make for a nasty situation in our mouths. Gums or Gingiva as is their technical name, consists of mucousal tissue. They're really similar to what the "slimyness" of our lung tissue is like, and that's why CFers have so much trouble having healthy gums.

Be careful not to use harsh rinses, but stay away from products that don't have alcohol in them, as these can sometimes be contaminated with cepacia.

Biotene or Tom's of Maine (baking soda flavor) are pretty good for us CFers I've heard.

Here are some articles I wrote about teeth and dental hygiene:
