Habitat for Humanity

I was selected to volunteer with Habitat along with 5 other people in my office. While I am very excited I am also very nervous about my health and being able to do all the manual labor.

My question is:

Has anyone (CF or non-CF) every volunteered for them and if so how manual was it? Meaning was it very strenuous (sp?)? I am considering handing my spot over to someone else but don't want to if I could do the work.

Oh also...my office doesn't know I have CF

Thanks!!!

I have volunteered for Habitat and what I did was paint...which wasn't very strenous. You can check with the coordinator to see what type of work they will be having you do and let that guide your decision. My experience with Habitat is that there are lots of different volunteers with different abilities, so hopefully there will be some appropriate for you to do. Have fun!!

I volunteered for Habitat when I was 15, they actually had too many people for working on houses so we ended up going to a farm. I lived in the city at the time and we went to help out at a teaching farm. It was ran by an elderly couple, children from the city went there to learn about animals and how farms work because they dont get that in the city. I had my choice of work and ended up helping clean out a steer's (male cow) stall. It was really difficult but everyone new about my CF and so I took plenty of breaks. We had alot of fun helping with the animals and even tried to bathe the steer...didnt work out too well, he just ran around with us chasing him.

Sorry my expirience probably isnt that helpful.

When I wanted to volunteer, I asked them about this very thing and they told me they have ton of different things you can do to help. There is even office work that they need volunteers for. I'm sure there will be something you can do that will not be too strenuous for you, but definitely tell them what your limitations might be. You don't have to tell your office, just tell the HH coordinator or whoever you end up working with on site. Good luck - are you going to blog about this? I'd love to hear how it goes!
