So our son had a Dr. vis it on Thursday which went ok but coud ahve been better. He gained weight but only about 8oz in 2 weeks so they were not overy happy with that, we have to go for a weight check in 2 weeks. The Dr. said his lungs sounded very good and unless his throat cuture grows something he doesn't need antibiotics, yay. This is the not great part the dietician part. She once again was disappointed that he wasn't gaining enough or eating as much as she wanted. I told her, "I'l tell you right now he never drinks 24oz of formula. It's not going to happen." I don't think she liked that but oh well. She was talking about changing more stuff and I told her "You know genetics are working against him too. My husband can't gainn weight to save his life, he's 6'1" and only weighs 150lbs."She said yea well he doesn't have CF. We don't know that for sure we're waiting to get genetic testing and besides did she forget about genetics. So she changed formula to Alimentum hoping he woud take more. He's been on it for 3 days and is taking less, stooling more, having looser stools, and has been more cranky so obviously that didn't work. She also wanted me to space out feedings more but I'm not going to starve him. Sorry I just can't stand here she doesn't listen and keeping changing stuff and it doesn't usually help. At least the Dr. agreed with me keeping the Activia in the bottles and upping the daily salt.

Although I do agree with you that "other" genetics dictate how easily you put weight on or how fast/tall you grow....PLEASE realize that she is just looking out for your little one.

Sadly IF the reason he isnt gaining weight is because of the genetics like your husband & NOT CF then when he starts having exacerbations from his CF it will be twice as hard to maintain his weight.

I know its frustrating. I know many times they dont take some things into consideration. I also believe they often dont allow enough time inbetween changes to see a difference, BUT at the same time.....if you let things go too long it can turn into a mess.

Its a Catch 22!

Just do your absolute best...research on your own, get opinions from other PARENTS of CFers who have been through it & could offer ideas rather then just give orders.

CF is challenging & that is what we are here for. To listen & help!

my daughter had a very difficult time gaining weight in the beginning....(the end result was a gtube, its wonderful, but thats beside the point)...she wouldnt drink more than 3 oz at a feeding, but it did help when i added rice cereal to her formula..that fattened her up kind of fast for a while. have they suggested that? at first my daughter also didnt like the alimentum, but i gave it 2 weeks and her body became accustomed to it and she did well on it until they switched her to pediasure because she got older. i know how frustrating it is to deal with this issue, but hang in there...(i would ask if you could try the rice cereal..i added 2oz rice cereal to 3 oz formula, i had to criss cross cut the bottle nipple because it was so thick.) but our doc kept telling us that weight gain helps with lung function and improvement, etc...
