Haemoptysis and flying

I don't think flying in itself will cause a really big bleed if your bleeding is under control. But if there is already an infection, it could trigger it because of the slight change in air pressure or even the dry air-conditioned air, so like Lisa said it makes sense to ensure your health is in great shape before going on a flight.

As i said i haven't had another bleed and maybe could do with a tune up before i go anyway cos my FEV is down a bit.

The others came on when i was at work with no warning at all so i'll just have to hope everything will be ok.

I suppose if we thought what if all the time we'd never do anything

I have had at least 4 major episodes of Hemoptysis. One being on a plane going from California to New York. It was a horrible experience. They had to turn the plane around over Denver and land in Vegas. I spent 1 week in a hospital, and then flew home, scared to death.

My suggestion is to not fly if you have had episodes. It is not worth it.
Take a train, bus, drive. The air in the cabin of a plane is recirculated and you are getting everyone elses germs. The lack of oxygen up high is also an added risk.

I had a double lung transplant in 1997 and doing great and I have flown over 50 since that... love to fly.
