Haemoptysis and flying

I'm new to the site. I came across you all after having haemoptysis for the first time last year. I had it once and again, which i ended up going into hospital with and starting IV's. I have always kept really well so it was a shock.

Thankfully i've not had anymore for the last six months.

Can i just say thanks to everyone on the site cos it was nice to know i wasn't alone in what was a scary time and i picked up some good advice.

I have now booked a holiday with a 4 hour flight. Although i've not had haemoptysis for 6 months i'm really nervous in case it comes back whilst i'm away or during the flight.

Just wondered if anyone has flown with this and if it would be anything to worry about.

I dont have major bleeds, and actually only recently had them a bit more severely again after being bleed-free for about 8 years! And yes mine seems to be triggered by flying + infection combo. But strangely not while ON the flight but rather a few hrs after landing, it happened 2x like that. I just had them embolized on Monday tho, because I also need to take a looooong flight soon. I was terrified of the embolization procedure but it really wasn't bad, and if it will stop the problem for a few years I feel its worth it. The doc explained how your arteries in your lungs enlarge because of trying to get more blood to your infections, and how having these big ones can be dangerous if you should bleed...I weighed up the pros and cons and decided to have them embolized. I decided if they looked thru the angiogram and all looked perfect then at least i knew all was ok, but they found 2 dangerous-looking ones and embolized...But having said all this, I have flown plenty of times where there was no bleeding so it's not necessarily going to happen and you may be fine again for a long time. Not really helpful info, sorry! I guess its just all so complex and everyone is different...

I am really intrestered in hearing what everyone has to say about this. I havent flown in about 8 years. Fear of flying suddenly hit me at 19. But im over that byt Im really worried baout my health and flying and my bleeding. I have ghad about 5 bleeds in my life, the last one a massive on said the hospital. I was admitted that day and kept for 4 days and put on ivs for 3 weeks. Im really scared about flying with the fear of having a hemotsis. Does flying make it more likley for us to have one?

My husband has had A LOT of hemopystes (he has had 7 embolizations), but he has never had any trouble when flying and we fly a few times a year. I don't know if flying would increase the chances. But I think that the best thing that you can do is to try to keep yourself as healthy as possible leading up to your trip, since a lot of time hemopystis is triggered when there is an underlying infection.
