Handicapped sticker?

The DMV Placard is what I was talking about (aka....handicapped sticker car thingy).
I would like to have one when I'm lugging kids around (my sisters kids and my stepdaughters kids). It would make life a lot better.
Otherwise, I just don't go anywhere b/c I hate to park 1/2 mile away and walk when it's freezing and I'm trying to hang onto kids.
I wish it were MY choice instead of a doctors.
My husband brought up a good point......there are overweight people who have placards. They are the ones who need exercise. I know I need exercise but I go to a gym for that. I don't depend on the Walmart parking lot to make me get a workout. Just food for thought!
Thanks for your input.

I don't think that if you are overweight you get one just for being overweight. Maybe morbidly obese though. I asked my nurse and she sent all the papers in and I got one. I use it when the weather is really bad and I am sick.

I don't really think the whole abusing thing is true. Most people on here that I have talked to say that they only use it when they have to. Sure sometimes people use it to their advantage (i am sure I have once or twice) but not all the time.

I just recently got my CF nurse to fill out a DMV form for a handicap sticker. I'm sending it in to them in the next couple of days to get one.

I went to the DMV and got the form. Here in NC it states on the back "Lung Disease" as a reason for qualifying. I took it to my local pulmo. doctor, I didnt even bother with my CF doc since he is 2 hrs away. He filled out the paper, I took it back to the DMV that day and got my tag right then. However, I only use it when I feel is needed. I use it when it is really cold, really hot or humid, or I am sick and feel SOB. I will use it to my advantage when I am at a concert or a huge event like that because I know that I cant handle the walk. Yes, CFers need their exercise but you can do that inside on a treadmill where it is warm...not in -30 degree weather. I would meet with your doctor and explain why you think you need it. He might just say "we dont like giving them out to everyone" thinking that ppl that really dont need them will take that answer and let it go. If you really need it, keep requesting it. He should see that you are serious about it by not letting it go.

I asked my docs when I lived in San Antonio and was going to grad school at UTSA... The parking lot in under a freeway and the walk is EXTREMELY long to the building. I often walked 15 minutes breathing in the exhaust fumes and I remember a couple of incidents when I got inside and could hardly breath and was coughing and super SOB just from breathing the pollution at rush hour (this was even holding my coat over my mouth when I walked!).

When I explained this and told the docs I'd only use it when I couldn't find a close spot, they just said no. To my face. "Not sick enough for that". I was insulted, but never brought it up again. I think pollution and exhaust is just as bad as walking in the -30 below with wind chills of -50! (I lived in ND for 26 years, so know about that too! lol)... But apparently I was silly to ask. So, I don't ask now. Kinda afraid to.

I live in Vegas, which has blowing dust advisories and carbon monoxide advisories every other day or so. I stay indoors almost all the time here cause I can't walk in the dust and get VERY SOB, but I don't want to sound like a "baby" and mention that to my Salt Lake docs, even if they'd understand. I don't want them to think I just want it for "fun". So, now I just have DH drop me off at the doors. I WISH someone would understand that its not just FEV1 and constant breathing problems that make a CFer need a placard. Its also the environment in which one lives and how that MAKES our breathing worse, if even just for the moment you're walking from your car to the door. Urgh.

I am very frustrated by the whole thing. I would think CF docs (above anyone else) would see why we SOMETIMES need to be close to our destination. I think its kinda a double standard sometimes. Some docs seem to think we're sick enough to have to go see them every 4 months (even if we're feeling great), but these same docs won't give us access to closer parking for days we really feel sick (and think its ok to breath in exhaust for 15 minutes every couple of days). Sorry to rant, but I was very disappointed.

... Anyway, to answer your question, NO, I don't have one. But, wish we could all get one for days we need it.

I had one in college when my arthritis was so bad I couldn't walk to class. Of course, I was also an SMU cheerleader which obviously is a far cry from needing a handicapped sticker. I remember one time my arthritis was so bad I was miserable....accompanied by 105 fevers. Anyway, the fever part had broken and I drove up to a restaurant to pick up food. It was s freezing day and I parked in a handicapped spot. I slowly made my way to the restaurant, picked up my food and came back to a message on my car written in red lipstick. It said, "Where is your handicap????"
Stupid.... I got rid of that dumb thing that day. I hated it for making that lady write that on my window.

If I get sicker,I will absolutely get another one.
