My husband is going to a CF clinic in 2 weeks to be tested for it. We are pretty sure he has this. We are in the process of trying to get insurance and Docs told me they wouldn't diagnose it until he was covered so that Insurance company can't say it was pre-existing. What health insurance do most of you have? We can't afford a very high monthly premium and if he does have this we are going to need doctor's copay, etc..... Please help!!!

If you already have any type of insurance it won't matter if he is dx with CF.. You just can't let the insurance lapse..

If you don't have insurance... Get a life insurance policy Now.... I had mine right before I was dx.. and actually cancelled it on me because they had the right to do that for 90 something days...

Paying for insurance out of pocket can be really hard.. I have a COBRA plan that costs almost 500 a month... Thankfully my old hospital I worked at is paying for it..

So to answer your question.. even if you don't think you can afford a high monthly payment, if you don't have a good insurance you are going to be paying so much money out of pocket, that it would have been cheaper to just pay for a better insurance.

I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO.. I love it, for some reason since I am maxed out on out of pocket expenses and have been since January 14....everything is covered but my copays for medications..

I hope this makes sense because I am tired

I also have BC/BS PPO. Back when I was a kid my parents had BC/BS too. I wonder when I'm going to hit their lifetime limits. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> They haven't really hassled me over any of the CF related issues (genetic testing, meds etc...) Mine is through my employer who pays for part and us employees have a portion we pay for out of our paychecks.

If you're a member of any professional organizations, specifically those geared for small home businesses, they often offer health and insurance (life too) plans through them, because that enables them to negotiate volume pricing for their members. For example I'm a member of ISGB (Internation Society of Glass Beadmakers - I make and sell beads part time) and they offer such things. Also AIAA (American INstitute of Aeronautics and Astronautics - work related). Depending on your field or your husband's area of expertise you might be able to join one such organization and get into the group plans. ~Juliet

I have Aetna PPO through my company and the plan is amazing. However I will have to COBRA it soon and it is going to be around $450 a month. I have no out of pocket expenses except for copays and those aren't that high. I have looked into individual plans before and for what is needed with CF and hospitalzations and all the meds the rates are ridiculous...unless you don't mind deductables which I HATE.

If you have insurance through work (but I am assuming not since you are asking this) then get him on your policy ASAP. If he has insurance through his work then they can't deny him. I haven't been denied at all when insurance is through a company. Only when I looked into individual policies was I told no.
