Health Insurance in CA

Hi folks,

I live in California, and currently work full time with great health insurance. However, we're about to hit a round of layoffs soon and I'm not sure if I'll be cut! In the event that I am, I know that COBRA is an option for health insurance (I go thru Kaiser), but it looks like it will be at least $500 per month. However, I remember talk of the Genetically handicapped Program or something like GHPP for people w. CF. I'm wondering if this would be a wise thing to look into. I'm not married and don't have any one else supporting me so I really need to take care of this issue. Has anyone gotten health insurance thru GHPP? What exactly does it do? Many thanks!

You may want to keep the COBRA. At least until you confirm you're eligible for GHPP and you're officially signed up. There is a rumor floating around that Gov. AS is going to cut GHPP due to the state budget crisis.

You may want to read about GHPP and sign up before you get laid off. Not sure how it would work if you get accepted, and GHPP goes under. Could you get COBRA back?

There is a rumor, again the key word is rumor, that it might not survive the budget cuts due to the crisis.
