Help Blood!

Hey,

This morning with my morning PT I coughed up more blood. I said last week it was teeny streaks here and there. Today it was alot more. There was blood in every cough. The difference today too is that I'm having these uncomfortable chest pains. When I breathe in and out in burns.

So I called the doctor and left a message with the secretary. I'm waiting for them to call me back. But-what do you think this is? I'm scared. I've never had blood in the past. Is this a turning point? God, I wish they'd hurry up and call!

It isnt necessarily anything to panic about. You might have an infection getting out of control or it could be aggrivated by something new you are doing. It is very common in CFers. Until you hear from Dr. Walker I would drink some ice water & make sure you sit up. If you can tolerate it, place an ice pack on your chest. If you have a Vitamin K prescription at home, pop a few & just try to stay calm. I am a wiz the bleeding thing!

Christian,
As a veteran of coughing blood, I know it is unsettling. One of the reasons I get blood in sputum is a moving plug from a small airway into a larger one. The strain of the plug moving causes pain and some blood. This is only temporary - if it continues to hurt, call doctor again. The other reason is that I'm pushing too hard while getting therapy. This is usually bigger pain and more blood, but again, goes away rather quickly.
All will turn out okay - just be watchful.

I hope you get to the bottom of this. Like Melissa said, it could be an infection.

I had coughed up blood starting at the age of 17. I always had this happen right around the time of my monthly cycle. I would say it was about a teaspoon at the most on my worst day. Later on, I found this is very common for woman with CF from reading this in the CF magazines.

At the age of 18, I started supplementing with selenium 250 MCG. (micrograms) along with vit E and once I was on this program eating beef liver a few times per week I never coughed up any blood.. I of course progressed with my CF over the years but the blood was a thing of the past.
just wanted to share, Risa

Risa- eew!Liver! Seriously, though-good for you for doin it. I've heard of taking it also for problems like this. Does anyone know-is taking dessicated liver pills the same as that?

Thanks for you replies. Dr. Walker called back. She said that it is several things-Vit K deficiency. And infection. So you were all bang on the money. You wouldn't imagine the scenarios in my head before. Lung collapse-is this the end? Whew. I gotta chill. When you've never had it before, you just never know. There's somthing about seeing blood too, you know? Never seems good.

Coughing up blood can be very scary. The first time I ever coughed up blood was when I was 21, and it was CUPS of blood. Its not a turning point. Like everyone said it could be infection, blood vessels breaking from coughing, of the vitamin K deficiency. The reason behind my coughing was a major blood vessel that had become "corroded" from repeat infections in one area of my lungs. Drink lots of cold stuff, keep yourself elevated and you should be fine.

You'll be in my thoughts!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi Christian,
You know for sure there is an infection since you have cepacia. It sounds like it may be rearing its ugly head . I had bleeds before i had cepacia, but not like i have since i do have cepacia. The one intern in the hospital told me cepacia is very irritating to the lungs and can cause bleeding sometimes when things go haywire. Your best bet is to make sure not to lay down flat till you are sure it has stopped. Laying flat can cause bleeding as well. Like Risa said.... i also get bleeding around the time of my cycle and its frustrating because i hate it and wish it would stop for good. Each time i had to have an embolization it was 2 or 3 days before my cycle. Maybe menopause will be my answer ~shrugs~

Hi Christian

yes desicated liver pills are good. I hated the taste of beef liver so I would put tomatoes and swiss cheese melted over it and it tasted pretty good. I have not had this dish in a long time but would only buy certified organic if I were to eat this again. Times in the cattle industry has changed from years ago.

If you do not want to try good ole liver than perhaps buy the desicated brand but I could not tell you which company to buy. I read all of the contents before you buy it. It could contain other ingredients that you are not familiar with

Feel better

Just for the future.....it might very well happen again. It wont be as traumatic, but still unsettling. There is something about seeing blood come out of you especially quickly or for no "obvious" reason!

Risa,<br>
I have the exact problem as you! Blood every month! I'm
also wondering though if your lung transplant helped with that?
Also what CF magazines are you talking about?<br>
Thanks!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Hi Hairgirl

I only coughed up blood every month for only one year and when I started taking the mineral selenium along with other minerals, the blood problem completely went away. Of course my health got worse over the years and I needed a double lung transplant twenty something years later. With new lungs there is no coughing up blood. If you get a cold you can get slightly congested.

I read about the blood problems in IACFA about fifteen years ago. Sometimes certain articles are always remembered.

I would ask your doctor if it is safe for you take Selenium. IF you take more than 250 mcg it can become toxic.

TAke care
