Hey guys,

I have a question I was hoping someone could help with. I have occassional bleeds -- not a big deal. Sometimes in the fall they come more frequently than other seasons, I imagine because it is so dry. I've never coughed up enough to need to go to the ER.

Lately though, it seems all I need to do is lie flat on my back at night, and I'll bleed. I'll sit back up and it'll be better -- but I'm confused. What makes you bleed as soon as you lie flat??? I'm just concerned b/c this is happening practically every night -- I'll have to go out and buy more Vitamin K supplements!

Does this lying down thing happen to anyone else? And why??

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,
Kris

Hi Kris,
Yep it sure happenes to me. I havent slept laying flat for over 5 years ( even after having 3 embolizations). I have heard all sorts of reasons for why we would have a bleed while laying flat. One being that the blood tends to pool in the lungs when we lay flat and the weak ones spring a leak. If this is happening everynight all of a sudden you may want to call your doctor and let him know whats going on. You may have an infection that is stirring things up. You could always prop yourself up on a few pillows so that you arent laying completely flat till it gets resolved. You def. should be taking Vit K. if you are having hemoptysis problems. Also you may want to avoid Ibuprofen or any kind of anti-inflammatory since they thin the blood. I hope it resolves quickly for you.

When my husband asked a similar question one of his docs told him to not lay down quickly, but rather to "ease into it." He said that when you lay down suddenly the blood has to redistribute quickly and that causes more pressure in the veins. I don't know how well this works. In fact, my husband had a bleed when he laid down last night (but I don't think that he is following the doc's advice).

I never experienced severe bleeding. Are you allowed to keep an ice pack on your chest? Would that help?

When I had trouble breathing before transplant, I felt that Ice would help me breathe better and it helped a lot. I kept a tiny cooler next to my bed and kept on putting ice on my chest, taking off put it back in the coooler and repeated the whole process.

hope you feel better
