Hemoptysis and O2 sats

I'm not usually prone to hemoptysis in the summer. Winter is when I have the most trouble, especially when stinging cold air makes me cough w/o being able to catch a decent breath.

Lately I've been keeping a close eye on my sats because they had been hovering around 93 and 94%. I know that doesn't sound low, but for me it's odd. I'm used to 99%. I asked an RT how I could improve my sats, and he said that if I continue with the exercise regimen that I've been doing, they should climb up on their own as my lung function improves.

He seemed to be right. I had been back up around 98% most of this week. Then yesterday they dropped all the way to 89%. This morning I noticed just a little bit of blood streaking in my sputum. As the morning went on, my chest felt yuckier, particularly on one side. It got so uncomfortable that I left church and came home to rest.

All afternoon I've had more bleeding. The bright red kind that you can feel coming up because you notice a gurgle. Has anyone else noticed if their sats tend to drop dramatically with a bleed?

I have a clinic appt. on Wed, but I'm planning to call tomorrow and let them know what happened. In the mean time, I'm going to take it easy.

I cant answer this completely. WHen I have the gurgle its usually at home so I dont know what my O2 sat is, but it would seem normal that its lower since I cant breath normal since I am cough up blood.

HOWEVER; any bleeds in the hospital have not shown any significant drop in my O2 sat. I also can say that even at home once its over that I feel "lighter" in the chest & I would "think" my O2 sat should be good.

Basically I cant tell your about the gurgling times, but having bleeds at different times yes.

Hmm, I can only tell you that I am short of breath just before mine "lets go", and when I feel tight and SOB like that, and suddenly feel better, I can pretty much be certain that the coughing up blood is coming right away. Like Melissa, I too feel better-lighter- after it is over....

funny I thought this was jsut me, sorry cant help with the o2 questions, but I always get a really sore back (happens when I get sick too) then I feel 'tight' and then I usually have a bleed thereafter.

Lauren-hope that the bleed settles down and proves to be just that and not somethign nasty brewing for you.
