Hemoptysis

I had my first hemoptysis when I was 7 mos pregnant. It was mild, I'd say just a few tbsp of blood. Since it had never happened (and I was pregnant) I was terrified and called 911 and was taken to the hospital. The bleeding stopped within minutes but I had 2 more bleeds that same week (all that stopped just as quickly). My doctor kept me in the hospital for the next 2 mos on and off until I delivered our baby. <br><br>Getting to my question: I was pressured by my doctor immediately to have a pulmonary embolism done.  I basically refused. And of course on the second bleed and the third they were chomping at the bit to have it done. I was told that if I weren't pregnant they would have definitely done the emblization. To me that seemed REALLY drastic. I'm wondering if (fingers crossed) it have another bleed post pregnancy...should I have an embolism done? For EVERY bleed? How do other doctors handle this?<br><br>

I suffered a sever hemoptysis back a few years I lost all most 4 quarts of blood during it, they the DRs were ready to give me a blood transfusion. But once the bleeding stopped which it did all on its own they didnt have to. I have never had a pulmonary embolisms. I do have frequent hemoptysis not anything to sever but enough that I have mentioned to my DR about pe but she says we dont need to do that until it is bad enough for it.

From what you describe I don't see what I would consider justification for an embolization.

They are normally used if 1) the bleeding keeps going, or reoccurs over a period of time or 2) if you bleed enough that your stats (PTT & PT) are impacted.

Beyond that is sounds like your Dr was being very aggressive, probably more than I would have been comfortable with in your position.

Yeah, I definitely don't see a reason to embolize! I have been having several small hemoptyses lately. I was told that I don't need to go to the ER unless I've coughed up more than 1/4 cup of blood (one of my friends was told 1/2 cup by her doctor) and it's not stopping. As far as I understand, embolizing is definitely NOT something you want to do if you don't absolutely have to.

Greetings, Frankly if it slows and stops on its own as fast as yours has been, I wouldn't even consider calling the hospital. What one needs to worry about is a high flow of blood.
