I have no idea where my episodes come from. Whenever I have them, I don't have an infection at the time, nor am I on any meds that may cause it, nor am I ever having coughing fits either. Mine always happen out of the blue. My doc can never figure out what triggers my episodes, but he does know that the bleeders are always from the area of my lungs that have repeat infections i.e. where there's damage.

Same with me, totally out of the blue, that's what worries me! I left work one day and had to pull over and coughed up about a cup and a half of blood! It's always when I've feeling good! We joke about that, "I feel good! Watch out!" The Dr. did a lung scan and both my upper lobes are really bad, so if I had another bleed that is uncontrollable like a couple years ago they might consider surgery to take out to two upper lobes! I just hate that it happens out of the blue! Once, it happened in the Wal-mart parking lot!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyways, glad to know others have this problem too. Thanks.

Mine tend to happen in the middle of the night. I'll wake up with the taste of blood at the back of my throat, and then I'll start coughing the blood up. I've also had a bleeder while out for dinner. Always during the strangest times!

the first time i had one i had just finished a treatment and laid down to go to sleep. i felt a little tickle like i needed to cough and when i did it was all liquid and tasted funny to me, so i got up and turned my light on and spit into a pan i had handy and was like OH $#!t... i could feel my lungs filling up and my breathing getting compromised so i had to keep coughing and almost filled up my pan (one they give you at the hospital) before i got to the bathroom. i couldn't yell for my parents (i still lived with them as i was right out of college in 03), for that matter i couldn't even talk. i was throwing up from the blood that escaped to my stomach instead of out. my sister came in to see what i was doing kneeling by the toilet. i looked at her and she about freaked as i had blood everywhere by this time my face and hands, the toilet, the floor, it was horrible. she got my parents and they were just in shock as i was and they put me in the car and started the 50-60 mile trip to my hospital. the bleeding let up by itself once in the car so i wasn't quite as scared but still confused what was going on cause that had never happened to me before. i didn't feel congested or anything at the time... like you say just out of the blue... they put me on IV antibiotics because they say an infection causes things like that. my doc took me off the meds after 10 days as my pft's were better than normal. had one other smaller bleed once but it stopped within a few minutes but i was feeling like i was getting sick that time... that was about one year almost to the week. none really since then, just a bit of streaking now and then...

Donovan - what you described happened to me the first time. Its like your lungs are filled with fluid, and you can't stop coughing it up. I think this happens to everyone with CF eventually. Its blood vessels that rupture from repeated infections, from coughing fits, etc.

Donovan-Thanks for sharing, that's exactly what it feels like! Glad to know others feel the same way. And I don't know about others but it usually happens when I lay down, I haven't laid flat in bed in years!!!! I'm kinda scared to really, besides incline helps me breathe better. One of my Dr.'s said that our blood vessels don't grow as big as other adults and so they easily erupt due to coughing and infection. But it's just scary! And I really hate the feeling.
