ok i have a werid question, well maybe not so werid. i have two cats, they are indoor, never go outside, they aren't allowed to. but here is the question...i used to have the cat box in the guest bedroom, well they peed on the floor, so i moved the cat box into our second bathroom. well, now when i clean the box, i clean it every other day. i've noticed these bugs in it. i never noticed them in the box before when it was in the bedroom. has anyone every noticed bugs in the cat litter? they have wings and are a little bigger than a gnat. oh and i will add that i have one of those jumbo size cat boxes with the lid, where the cat has to walk through a door to get in and out. anyways thanks guys and sorry for the werid post.

I've never noticed gnats or little bugs in our cats litter. I have seen those long worms before though. Mega UGH! We have one of those automatically cleaning boxes which is soooo fabulous! It scoops the litter clean into a hopper and all you need to do is dump it out. We have 2 cats so the hopper needs to be emptied every day or two.

While we're on the subject of cats, I wonder if CFers should even be getting close to cat litter. I remember when I was pregnant I wasn't allowed near it because of risk of catching some infection that could pass through to the placenta - something that was in cat feces. That was long before my CF DX and I don't recall the details. (My daughter is now 13.) Besides the obvious washing your hands carefully afterwards and not inhaling litter dust is there any risk of cleaning the litter box to our CF lungs?

I am a registered veterinary technician and I can tell you that I have no clue what the insects may be!! That's really odd. They're obviously not from that cats themselves as there are no flying insects that are parasitic on cats (discounting the obvious ticks or mosquitoes). The parasite mentioned by Juliet is toxoplasmosis, a single celled protozoan, that primarily infects outdoor cats through ingestion of infected rodents or soil. What kind of litter are you using? I wonder if it's a biodegradable form such as pine? Perhaps the decomposition of litter and/or feces is attracting these mystery bugs!

i try not to use breath when i scoop, not to mention it stinks lol, so not breathing is a good thing. i know what you are talking about being pregnant though. toxicplasm...something. i still cleaned the box though. i was super super careful. and washed my hands with antibaticral soap afterwards and still do that now. anyways i'm sure they suggest we don't as a cfer to clean it. cause of the dust, but i don't listen very well.
