Hermit Crab

I got my first hermit crab in college. I had it for 4 years I think. While in college I eventually cultured mycobacterium abscessus and b. cepecia. It never occured to me it could have been from the hermit crab. I used coconut husk instead of sand for bedding material though.

Hmm. I lived in the dorm my freshman year so I always assumed I got the M. Abscessus from the showers there an I never knew where I got the b. cep from... I have pondered if it was because when I first started sinus flushes I used tap water... then the next time I got a culture I had b. cepecia in it.

My husband and I have had one or more saltwater fish and or marine coral tanks in our home since before our daughter with CF was born. We have never had a problem with chest infections or any other CF exasterbations. She has been hospitalized only 4 times in her life. Most were for CF maintenance and one was to have g-tube placed due to malabsorbtion. Like a previous post said.... LET KIDS BE KIDS!! Just teach them about germs, handwashing and rules for the pet. In my opinion, it isn't fair to keep a child from these experiences just because he/she has CF. Love them, enjoy them and let them LIVE their life to the fullest!! Have as many learning opportunities as possible!! And have FUN!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> <3
