OMG That is soooooo awesome. I think Tigers & Lions are beautiful creatures. I am an animal lover & pretty much any kind of cat captures my heart, but I guess that goes with most animals.

So am I and I love to travel, so I combine my hobbies!!!

I was
swimming with dolphins in Israel
snorkeling only 2 meters over a manta ray at the maldives
feeding a giraffe and holding a tarantula in Crystal Springs/Florida
watching a coyote during a horseback ride near Phoenix/Arizona
touching Shamu the Killer whale in Sea World/San Diego
watching a platypus in the wild in Australia and touching a Koala and kangaroos
bathing an elephant and ride on him in Sri Lanka
gallopping through the egyptian desert and around tunesian beaches
whale watching in the dominican republic
on safaris in Kenia (we have even seen a leopard)
holding up to five Aras and cakatoos in bird parks in Bali and Florida
holding many snakes and lizards and iguanas
having a lemur on my shoulder in Madagaskar
petting Giant turtles at the seychelles
watching baby alligators in the Everglades
visiting the aquarium in New Orleans before "Rita"

and I loved it all!

to be honest: I´m quite lazy most of the time... And we have also been in an elephant camp, where I laid down on the ground, an elephant standing over me, massaging my back with his foot.

Ok on THAT part, I will call you 100% certifiably insane. My sister trained elephants, and while she never had any close calls, elephants can freak out for no real apparent reason. Laying on the ground and having one of them massage your back with it's foot, Sorry Uli, but I put that right up there into any Darwins award book

Hi Eileen,

yes that was a bison. The photo was taken in a shop in Albuquerque, thats why I´m wearing that hat. I tried it and my boyfriend took the photo.
Which part of New Zealand do you live in, south or North Island? I would love to go there once, but it is quite expensive and the flight is very long, so you should stay at least 4 weeks...
Well, if I should win in the lottery...
Most of my vacations have been last minute trips, but I have never seen a last minute flight to New Zealand or Hawaii, where I would also love to go.

Wow Uli!!!!!!!!!

That has always been one of my dreams--to pet a tiger. The photo is amazing. I'm so glad you were able to do that.
My husband and I were going to go to Thailand, but instead decided to go to Dubai. We still plan on doing Thailand anyway.

Did you feel safe in Thailand? We had heard that it's not always safe, but I'd like your opinion since you were just there. Do you feel like it has recovered from the Tsunami yet? What part did you visit? Thanks, I appreciate it!

Hi Christian,

we stayed between Cha Am and Hua Hin, that is about 3 hours drive "down" from Bangkok. The tsunami was on the other side. Hua Hin does not have the same beautiful beaches like most of the islands an there are often jellyfish, but we had a beautiful hotel.
What do you mean with "feeling safe"?
- Health? I have all important vaccinations, Malaria is not very common there, but there were a lot of moskitos and as dengue fever is a kind of danger, you should use moskito spray.
-Eating? I do always eat (nearly) everything everywhere and had a diarroeh problem only once in Kenia until now. Maybe the oral antibiotics most of us take are a protection...
-Criminals? Well you should beware of pickpocketing in Bangkok, but thats the same in all big cities and places, where much people are. Especially as a woman I would not go in "dark places" at night, but thats also the same everywhere...
So yes, I felt safe (even under the elefant and between tigers), most people have been very friendly, we had good weather and it was a nice vacation!

Wow! So exciting. I kinda meant crime type safety. I'm not worried about health/food. We've been to some remote places, and know how to deal with that stuff. I wouldn't find a problem with not going out at night, as a woman I'd probably never do that anyway. I think pickpocketers are everywhere. I just wanted to see if the crime level is not much higher than typically everywhere else. I had heard someone say that in south Thailand there was some type of terrorist act, but I don't know the accuracy of that.
Of course I work in New York city, and you risk something happening if you go there, so why worry too too much? I'm just saying that I really don't choose to live like that. I don't agreee with the whole "fear" mentality that many, especially in my part of the world, live by. I don't agree with it. But I better stop before I get myself in too much trouble! I could go on about that.

I am going to Dubai, as I mentioned, which I can't wait for! But, Thailand is definately in my book for the near future! I would go just for those tigers!
What type of place (hotel) did you stay? What was that area like-more for tourists, or out of the way stuff?

Hi Christian,

I totally agree, fear is not a good "travel agent"...
While I was in Thailand, there was that problem with the "funny"Mohammed paintings in Denmark and I read in the internet, that there have been some protests in Thailand too but we did not notice anything personally.
You can find some informations at www.bangkok.com and www.huahin.com about these regions.
Bangkok is a real big city, much traffic, lots of people, not the best air, very hot,but as you live in NY...
Hua Hin has no crystal clear water like one knows from the pictures of Phuket or Koh Samui and there are a lot of multi-storied hotel buildings, but our hotel was different (www.verandaresortandspa.com) and very nice. If you want "nightlife", better go somewhere else!We have been lazy at the pool everyday and did take the shuttle bus from time to time to go outlet shopping or to the Hua Hin night market where you can buy watches, silk, t-shirts and so on. We made excursions to Kanchanaburi (where the tiger temple is), the floating markets (also very nice) and Bangkok (better take socks with you because you have to take off your shoes to walk into the temples and hundreds of naked, sweating feet on the floor...), which would all be far away, if you stay in Phuket or other southern places. Around the hotel there are some little "restaurants" where you can get good food for cheap prices (shrimp green curry 120 Baht, Coke light 20 Baht), a minimarket, but not much shops or anything else, so you have to go to Hua Hin for a little more action.
